do i go and get a dedicated server?

I read that to mean you want to provide remote backup services for your clients. It depends ultimately on your requirements eg. how many clients to be hosted and such. Generally a dedicated server would be a good minimum to start with given the low costs nowadays.

As for what programs, it depends on how your service is intended to work.

Do you just want for example
1. To allow them a space to upload (it can then be as simple as just a ftp software)
2. To you want to allow them to be able to sync their data both ways remotely (rsync would be useful for this)
3. OR perhaps you are going to run some custom programs. It all depends on you .
