Damn! NTL = #=-!

Having read on various reliable sources that NTL cable modems would be available on 14th May and after even ringing to confirm this, Guess What??? NTL says it gonna be a few months now.

ADSL isn't even available in my area. Stuck with 56k (and on AOL thats even less).

You guys/gals in the States have got it easy. :D

Anyways just had to get that out my system.

Last time I heard that dialup noise I woke up in a cold sweat.. Never again! :D

It gets me enough that people here in the US have been sucked into the wrath of AOL, but is there really no better option for you? I mean of all things, AOL?!

I regret to say but in the UK there is currently nothing that even nearly equals AOL.

AOL UK

Best Speed
Best Connection Periods
Best Uptime
Best Price
Toll Free Number From Any Telco

Its a very sad time indeed, but its true!

That's gotta be like needles in the eyeballs.
AOL together with the word "best"... Now, the apocalypse is near..

you cant even begin to imagine the pain I went through lifting up my coffee cup... picking up my coffee mat (oops I mean AOL CD)

and placing it in my CD-Rom drive, it struck me when it said "Welcome To Aol" and then "You Have e-mail" I cried for a week :bawling:

then...

it struck me AFTER installation, that i was without 50MB of disk space, and 15MB of ram !!

There's few exceptions that can equal the sheer bliss of uninstalling AOL and that damn AOL adapter.

LOL! Thats sad. I'd cry too if I had to turn on my computer and find out I was not instantly networked to the 'net!

As far as AOL cd's, my dad has a collection of them. I think he may have every single design every printed so far.

MattF.

Have you considered visiting http://www.blueyonder.co.uk <-- uk based cable modem company, part of cable and wireless which has merged with NTL.

Also, a new internet service is coming, using radio technology, sounds impressive due to data transfer/speeds you can get.

and, don't forget the satallite connection.

DirecPC isn't all that bad. I did lose my signal the other day though because a bug was on my reciever (NO JOKE!). Had to go outside with a broom and scare it off =\

400-680 kbps downloads... if only they had drivers supported by win2k =[ (I had to downgrade to win98 to use it)

Didn't DirectPC just up their prices? And are they the only one at the moment doing satellite internet?

I am a new subscriber, so I am not really sure. I do know that it is not a great deal at all. 39.00/month, and you still need a dial-up account. It's for the desperate :D

They have a new 2 way deal that I just found out about after I installed this baby... it costs 399.99 to upgrade, and 59.00/m

The 59.00/m isn't all tht bad.. considering that is what I am paying right now since I still need a dial-up account. I can think of a million other things I can do with my 399.99 though.

They were the first to offer satellite Internet reception, though they havent been the only one for awhile. Only downloading was by satellite, as at 400 kbps. Uploading required a standard ISP account, which they could also provide.

Starband (that Marty supplied a link to) was the first to have two way satellite communication for Internet access. They added uploading by satellite, and DirecPC is scrambling to add that capability as well.

I noticed the starband site does not mention such basic details as cost and transmission speed (in either direction), not even in their FAQ.

What are they hiding?

Duster

On the What is Starband page:

High-Speed:
StarBand downloads at speeds up to ten times faster than dial-up service - 500 kbps with targeted peak-time speeds in excess of 150 kbps. StarBand's current upload speeds range between 40 and 60 kbps. Peak time is weekday evenings.

and check out this page for purchasing and price info directly from starband.

http://www.starband.com/join/signup.html

Or this one if you want details on pricing from those that resell the starband service.

As thorough as you normally are, Duster, I am shocked you missed these. I think you might need some sleep.:D

DirecPC does have a 2 way satellite now (as posted in my previous post)

read the VERY LIMITED information they have on their site about it here:

You're right. Ive been working long and late on a major site redesign on deadline (an ad appears in a catalog that just got mailed out). I was up until 4 this morning alone.

I also think that it shows an inadequacy in their web site. I did see mentions of "up to ten times faster than dial-up service" What I didn't see is specifics on what that spped was. Depending on the price, which I didn't find either, it may not be a great value for 150kbps, especially since DirecPC has had 400 kbps since they began.

Apparently, as Corey points out DirecPC has finally added uplink capabilities, after being snookered on that by Starband. He was certainly right about limited information. One brief sentence is all they say on the subject.

It's time for either a bit more  or put on the coffee. I haven't decided which yet. Maybe a short nape will help with the decision ;)

I SWEAR - If i dont get something faster than this 56k AOL account soon im gonna get a loan, go out and buy a large quantity of fibre optic cable and lay the damn thing myself!

Then... walk to the end of my road where the telco contractor has been siting the last 3 months and blow up his van!!

:D  :D
