View Full Version : The 'value' of Urchin has been decreased due too RackShack ?

Rackshack includes Urchin , a great stats product (www.urchin.com) for $19 one time with their servers.

Before they started the Urchin deal, I was planning/deciding to buy their software. As you might know, Urchin costs $695 one time.
Now that RS includes it for $19 ( a $695 value! ) - There's no way I'm gonna pay such a price for Urchin anymore - since all hosts on RackShack are basicly getting it for free ( well, $19 ).

What do you think of this ?

Please note : This is not meant to talk negative about either RackShack or Urchin , which are both great companies.

Yeah,it's great of Urchin and Rackshack to make a nice deal BUT it does leave out everyone out and loses Urchin business.
I'm not sure exactly how they managed to do it for $19,but I do know it's worth it.

I personally don't think the stats are that great anyways, price plays a big part in this. You can only pull so much information out of the logs and there are many programs that do it just fine for cheaper or free. They all display the data differently, this one is way over priced, a prodigy of the boom, it's a bust as far as I'm concerned now and you'd be better off trying another anyways.

Well, obviously RS made a business deal with them. URCHIN has the potential to make over a 100,000 off of RS. Note, RS has I belive 10,000 servers...

Dave, true - but my point is : Since a lot of people can get it for 19 bucks with their RS server - Would you spend $695 for a license for a non-RS server ?

Which is why I think the value of rackshack has been increased due to Urchin, instead of the value of Urchin has been decreased due to rackshack.

Urchin is great, but is overpriced at $700.

Well you're right - $99 for a server with Ensim, Urchin, 400 GB - well it can't get better than that :)

It's amazing RS includes the software now, but you have to see it from a non-rackshack customer perspective.

Its the power of bulk buying. There are examples of this sort of thing happening everywhere, not just with computer software. You just have to change your own strategy to try and make it work for you.

There isn't that many. Some of the free ones can be harsh on the server processing. What do you think would equate Urchin at a much cheaper price or free?

You can't / may not use it outside RS.

If you think of it another way Urchin and RS gains... why?

People will now by Urchin software on a RS machine, where as they would never even consider it before...

1,000 customers @ $700? - $700,000
or 100,000 @ $19? $1,900,000

Not actual figures of course... but displays the possible point.

The retail Urchin license for $695 is for 100 domains, not just 1 domain.

Hmm, is the Rackshack $19 licence also for 100 domains?

So, what happens if there are more than 100 domains on the server?

I guess that you'll need to buy more licenses.

BTW, is it $19 one time? or $19 per month at RS?
