I've seen this argument over and over again...

BUT - I've never been satisfied with the outcome before - mainly - to many mixed idea's... BUT THATS OK.

I'm currently looking at getting a dedicated RaQ 4i for a development project. I've bounced backwards and forwards between raqshack and 2webspace a million times.

Tera-Byte (2webspace) has superior technical support and a proven track record. I've had a virtual host w/ them for 2 years now -and only once been unhappy with how an issue was delt with. They offer the 4i for $199.00 USD - no setup cost and 100GB of bandwidth, DNS Manager Access etc.

RaQshack... I've never experienced ANYTHING with them... BUT, I see they offer the RaQ's at $99.00 USD - $250 USD setup and 150GB of bandwidth a month. No mention as to DNS Manager Access etc.

SO... now I sit here and stuggle with the decision of - which is the better option. I trust Tera-Byte througly... BUT, like most - I want to save the extra dollar BUT I don't want to 'cost' myself down time and hassles... its just not worth it for me...

IT would be a real hassle to signup w/ Raqshack, find out they're 'useless' and have to move everything to TB.. but then again - I'm not sure they would be useless.

WHAT experiences have you had of the same sort? ...

WHAT can you suggest - it seems such a big decision...?

Thanks.

Rackshack now have a DNS manager!
If you want to manage your own DNS I don't think 4webspace will allow you to.

I have been with rackshack since march. I am very happy with them and have not had any serious incidents.
There support isn't the best, but that depends on who you are asking...

Speed is great!

Offcourse tera-byte has a DNS manager, I've been using if for 6 months now! However, I find it much more practical to have all my domains pointed to mydomain.com's DNS servers. This way I can point them to the right box, even if I change IP or webhost it will only take a couple of hours to update instead of couple of days. Their GUI is pretty easy to understand and they have lots of usefull features.

Worth a look - http://www.mydomain.com/

raqshack is not cheaper!
Add them up and then compare to 4websapce
$99/month+$250 set up fee+ $29/month for 256ram ( a must)+$29 set up fee+$29/ month 24/7 monitoring+ $29 set up fee for support + %8.5 taxes on top.

4Webspace = $199 +111 for ram no taxes if you are in USA or Europe. Dont forget the great support they have. Last night (sunday night) I sent an email and it got answered in less than 4 minutes then I had reply back 4 other times and all emails were answered almost in real time (less than 1 minute) Try to beat that. Support is everything.

tera-byte are by far the better of the two companys. Never used RackShack but when emailing sales & support they never once replyed when i enquired about possibly moving there.

were as when i was intrested in 4 webspace i always got a response and guess who from? steve :). Even 4webspace's ceo answers emails cant say the same for RackShack.

The support @ tera-byte is out of this world also. Company's who charge $300 to $500 a server dont even come close to providing support like them.

rackshack is cheaper...

no matter what you say, they are.. not everyone needs 256mb of ram, and it still only costs like 140$ a month with the 256mb of ram, and with 512mb of ram it is like 170$ a month.

the support is not good, rackshack tech's do know simple problems and such, but they always say "sorry i cant support the problem if it involves DNS" etc...

everything on the server involves dns... all my hosted sites etc.... it has nothing to do with the problem, but for some reason they say it to save them selves from doing there job.

so when it comes down to it, rackshack support sucks, but everything else is fine.

---------------------------------

I don't believe support is everything..... support is nice, and usually the people that need detailed support are not experienced with the servers in the first place.

I believe that reliability, small problems, and also uptime are the most important factors. I don't like when problems happen that I cannot fix, or when servers go down all the time.

Also take a peek at www.zoneedit.com

I like their infrastructure, it is more distributed and more robust. Do a traceroute on their nameservers and see how they are distributed;

ns1.zoneedit.com
ns2.zoneedit.com
ns3.zoneedit.com
ns4.zoneedit.com

I currently have a test domain (coreoperations.com) on zoneedit which I've been messing around with.

They seem good.

From what I'm reading in this post - 4webspace is going to be the way to go...

Thanks.

A couple of things with Rackshack. First, they accidentally deleted the DNS for one of my sites, so it wasn't working until I noticed the problem. Second, the site went down, server and all. I called, I wrote, there was always someone there to answer the calls, but I was always told, "We're having someone go out to where the RaQs are to take a look, we hope to get it back up within 24 hours".

24 hours later of course it still wasn't working. Into the second day I notice the server's back online. I contact support and they said it had been a "problem with the switch".

So, crap support and also, from my experience, crap to get anything sorted should your server go down.

On several occasions, when trying to access my site from the UK, I've had "page cannot be displayed" messages for several minutes at a time. During this time other sites have loaded fine and the problem with mine has disappeared after a few minutes. I've never had this with other hosts.

Personally I don't really trust Rackshack with my business critical sites, but I'm sticking with them for the time being because a) I don't want to pay any more than $100 a month and b) while there have been a few problems these might have been isolated.
