I currently have two servers there. Matt is very responsive when you need anything. The network performs great.... good bandwidth and fast pings.

Has there been an outage or two? Yup. Probably anyplace will experience that at some point or another, but resolution is quick.

As was pointed out above, do a search. I think you will find they are responsive.

I took a look at Staminus. The thing that bothered me greatly is that they are operating on a few T1s.

A T1 is a truly insignificant amount of bandwidth in today's market especially when you consider dedicated server providers are giving away 200-400 GBs of transfer a month for around $100.

When I brought this fact to their attention the response was, "Ya, but none of your customers are using anywhere near that amount". There are, however, customers that can and will use that much given the opportunity. All it would take is a small number of power users to fill Staminus' connections.

What will Staminus do if that happens?

On the other hand, this company seems to be extremely responsive to its users and seems to actually care about fixing problems quickly and communicating with its customers in a fast and efficient manner. This is a VERY GOOD thing.

Staminus is in Irvine, CA. Considering the large amount of fiber that sits in the ground throughout L.A. and Orange County, they should be able to get cheap local transit into One Wilshire or Equinix-LA where they could take advantage of cheap bandwidth deals that so many other dedicated providers have based their businesses on.

Until this company is able to obtain an amount of bandwidth that is commensurate with their offerings I would be cautious.

Yep, i'd second that ...
That's really seems to be the only thing to worry about.
Why not getting a fractional T3?
That'd be less expensive and would leave space for expansions ...

Yes, I too was concerned that they were only on a few t1's combined. They said that they never use all of it, so no need to get more. I don't agree with this, but whatever. I wonder if you can just get t1's quickly, or if it takes time.

Take a look here:

Their 4 T1's are almost always maxed out ... (atleast outgoing which is important for hosting)

"There are, however, customers that can and will use that much given the opportunity"

We've had customers burst large amounts without any problems.

The T3 has been scheduled. According to the telco, it'll take them several months to install it.

We have been ordering them on a consistent basis as usage gradually increases. Soon we will replace a large number of them with a T3.

<edit>
Forgot to mention, we have another T1 coming in a few weeks.

"Their 4 T1's are almost always maxed out ... (atleast outgoing which is important for hosting)"

We're pushing about 50% right now. Monthly average shows about 40% usage on outbound and weekly average usage shows about 50%. "Almost always" is a bit exaggerated :)
</edit>

Thanks to those who brought up valid points and kind compliments :)

You do have a good reputation and with that expansion in mind, more people will feel "safe" with you, i'm sure ;))

Of course it will. Anytime you count on the evil local telco it's going to take forever and it will cost you a bundle. Considering SBC/PacHell's track record I wouldn't be too comfortable relying solely on them for local transit.

Have you considered going with a fiber provider instead of the RBOC? There are several companies that have MANs that reach from Irvine to L.A. Onfiber (formerly Telseon) , Qwestlink, and MFS (Worldcom) are a few I can think of off the top of my head.

If you intend to run a Rackshack type operation (cheap servers with lots of bandwidth) a T3 will only be a temp. solution to an ever growing problem.

Most of these type of dedicated companies are able to offer the dirt cheap pricing because they are taking advantage of bargain pricing that is being offered to them from companies like Cogent, Verio, Aleron, Global Crossing, MFN, Yipes, WCG, etc.

Unless you drop the copper and run fiber you won't be able to connect directly to any of these carriers at a significant level to warrant bargain pricing. Buying T3s from PacHell/SBC to a NSP with a POP in OC is going to be very expensive in comparison. The only way you'll be able to make money is to continually oversell your available bandwidth to the extreme.

Basically its an "Economy of Scale".

I have a server with Staminus. We had some problems with the plesk install but Matt was always there and all problems have been solved. My server is always up and the speeds are just fine.

I currently have one server there. Yes, Matt is very responsive, if there is a situation. Any place will experience situations from time to time. What matters is how fast they respond to the situation, and Matt usually responds within 10 minutes. Not 10 hours or more without any information which some are experiencing. Support means everything, and speed is good. I can recommend Staminus.
