View Full Version : PogoLinux and ...customer service!?!

Few weeks ago I've signed up with PogoLinux for a dedicated server. I went for the "simple plan" which includes 700mhz PIII and IBM UDMA/100 hard drive.

When the server was ready, I've logged in and checked the kernel boot messages, and find out that the CPU is only running at 550mhz and the hd is a Western Digital DMA/66 capable only.

I've sent some e-mail to a guy named Tim Lee, the only person who would ever answer the phone at PogoLinux, and he gave me some excuse for the hd, but I still did not get an answer for the slower cpu.

Despite this cheap marketing tricks (promise something PogoLinux did not deliver) I liked the service. I believe is hosted at Above.net and the connection ...seems fast enough. However, yesterday I lost connectivity to the server, and when I've checked PogoLinux's web site for the phone number, their web site wasn't available, and I could only get to it by using the numeric IP address.

I've checked with Register.com about pogolinux.com domain, and their domain was expired in February, 2001. I believe that's why www.pogolinux.com would not resolve.

I'd like to find from former or current PogoLinux customers their opinion and concerns about PogoLinux. Is this a one man business (Tim Lee is the only person answering phone and email at PogoLinux,) and had I made a bad choice in singing up for dedicated web service with them.

Best regards,

Val

I saw the pogolinux site a while back when I was looking for server hardware. They seemed to have decent prices. However, I was and still am reluctant about buying a $1000 server from some place that I don't know will be around to support the their warranty 3 years from now.

Assuming that they get their site back online, I doubt I'll be getting any servers from them anytime soon. Even if it was a careless mistake that their domain got dropped, it definitely is a sign that things aren't very organized.

As for your server, that's pretty low. I suppose most people probably don't have the knowledge to check on the real server specs. Thus, they figure they can get away with it. But it seems pretty deliberate to me. I can understand if a host replaces a 40GB harddrive with a 38GB one since for some reason the 40GB one was unavailable. But it seems they gave you something totally different than what they advertised.

See this story posted one month ago on MSNBC:
http://stacks.msnbc.com/news/553615.asp

"Domain name services for Pogolinux.com were
provided by ViaNet Inc. until Tuesday morning, but
according to a spokesperson for ViaNet, PogoLinux DNS
services were actually shut off Tuesday morning due to lack
of payment. Lee said he was unaware of the cancellation,
and that his company was in the process of moving its
computers to a different provider, which might have caused
the snafu."

Yes Val, you made a bad choice.

If you do a search of the forums for pogolinux you will see that they have been involved in some controversy before. Personally, I avoid controversy when doing business.

About a week ago I ordered a server from PogoLinux. It was supposed to be shipped out last Tuesday. On Thursday of last week, they told me that it couldn't be shipped out because there was a misconfiguration. So they said that they'd fix it, and send it out on Next Day Air on Friday. Tim Lee said he'll send me a tracking number so I can see when it gets to the NOC.

Well, it's now Monday, and no server in sight. I never received a tracking number, there is no way to contact them by email, and no one picks up the phone. My client is royally ticked, and so am I. Mind you, good 'ole Tim already cashed my $1300 check. So now I'm out the money, will probably lose this great client, and still no server.

I will be contacting my lawyer about this, and have any loss incurred by me pushed off to Tim Lee.

Does anyone have any other ideas, or think I should try a different approach?

Thanks

I don't like to rub salt in people's wounds, but...NEVER pay for anything online by cash or cheque. Always use a credit card. Using a CC can save you a lot of headaches and problems if you end up not getting what you ordered.

I know, I know! :bawling:
The only reason I paid by check was because I needed the server soon (hah, like that happended!), and my cc was maxed out at the time.

I'll keep you guys posted on what happens..

Guys I wish you would have did a search on this site or knew about this site before you joined pogolinux. They are a CRAP place. There is a huge thread on here about how crappy they are and Tim Lee even deleted a thread that he started because there was so much negative crap on it.

I e-mailed him over and over asking him why he deleted the thread but he would never answer.

As for Tech support everytime I called RackLocation which was getting its servers from PogoLinux as well Pogolinux was charging the monthly fees for everyones dedicated server that they got through racklocation. Also support over the phone was by PogoLinux. So everytime I called them either no one answered or Tim Lee so I don't think they have much support.

That article about Tim Lee doesn't suprise me at all.

Or just try doing a search for PogoLinux or RackLocation on here.

I switched over to Weinbar.com and everything has been going really good.
