Hello,

I am getting my own apartment now and need to compile a list of things that I will need to buy.

Right now i have the basics, bed, dresser, stereo, wall unit, tv, computer, desk.

I have made a list of things I will need...

Toaster
Dishes (Plates, Cups)
Pots/Pans
Towels (bathroom/kitchen)
Vacuum
Broom
Garbage Can
Mop
Forks/Knives/Spoons
Microwave
Cleaning Accessories
Bathroom Accessories
Paint
Couch

Can you guys help me out for things that I have forgotten?

Thanks,

A camera (For taking pictures of the place as you move in so when you move out you have proof of it's condition)

Develop the film,. mail copies to the landlord and yourself leaving yours unopened.

When you move out have the landlord in person as you open them visibly seeing the postmark.

Forget everything on your list, get a 36 inch Sony Wega television, at least 500 watts of AC3 amplifier power. Two 15 inch KLH speakers with your center, surrounds etc.

A nice DVD player

A fork, a spoon, a butter knife, a knife, and a towelle and youre set. The less you take in, the less you will have to move out.

Always remember that apartments are impermanent things so move in as though you're moving out and you'll enjoy the place just that much more.

a foreman grill proves quite useful, and you can make almost anything in a coffee pot.

Groceries unless you plan on ordering pizza every night.

Some of this is just Misc. Junk

Sheets, blankets, pillow, curtains
Small table with chair(s) to eat dinner at
Shower curtain
Coat hangers
Something to patch old picture frame holes before you paint
Laundry basket

I've lived in many different apartments, and no matter how prepared I think I am, I always need something. So now when I move, I simply pack up all of my required things: bed, computer, dishes, furniture, etc.

Then I start setting the apartment up, put things away, and just get everything I brought in place. Then, I go through and see what I'm missing, what I could need, and pick things up as I need them. I hate having too much extra junk laying around.

You'd be supprised at the things you need, like a box of nails, thumbtack, broom, cleaning solutions, garbage cans, and who knows what. So if I were you I'd just move everything you have now into the apartment and get it squared away. Then write a list of things you are missing and go pick them up. It is much less to move in initially, saves time, and you don't end up buying stuff you don't really need.

That's my advice.. but this is my 4th apartment in about 5 years :D

You will probably want some lamps unless you really like ceiling lights.

Telephone
Wooden or plastic spoons for cooking
At least 1 spatula
Soup ladle
At least 1 good carving knife
Colandar or strainer
Besides just pots and frying pans make sure you also have some cookie sheets and/or pizza pans and a 9x13 baking pan and an 8x8 or 9x9 baking pan as well
If you have those basics, you should be able to make most things.

When you get your groceries, don't forget to get the basic spices you would normally want to use besides just salt and pepper.

Oh, and a few tools too. A hammer and a couple screwdrivers will help you a lot.

Cold beverages...once your done packing! Don't forget to disconnect your phone-utilities from your old place to connect your new place! That way your phone is working and you can use those new bulbs for the 'light'.

Toilet paper is VERY useful. And a sticker with your name on it for the postman, so you can have your letter delivered, and don't forget to call (who ever takes care of the post) about the new address, and call the powercompany for electricity.

Fuses is also a good thing to have. You don't change them that often, but when you do, it usually is dark outside, and all the stores are closed.

A PS2.

A fishtank.. 50 gallons at least. I have one and you would not believe how much it will liven up a room.

Wall pictures and indoor plants. Even if this is just going to be a bachelors pad, you still need something green to give your apartment some life.

Don't forget a fireplace set if your apartment has one. Cleaning products as well.

Finally, some invitations to send out to everyone you know and flyers to hang around town advertising your "house-warming" party. :) After that is when you'll need your cleaning products... if you haven't been evicted. :D

I just moved into my first apt. Been here for a month. I had a whole list of all the stuff I had to buy but I deleted it just a few days ago (how odd). So I went ahead and made a new list for you lol - I haven't slept in like 24hrs. and I'll do anything to cure my boredom.

Depending on where you are moving, be prepared to be really lonely for a few weeks. You'll really miss your family if you are used to being in the same state as them and are moving far away. If not, then you won't have any problems. Good luck!

Buy a new bed.
For everything else, tell parents, relatives, friends (particularly parents or grandparents friends) that you're getting your first apartment and you would welcome any stuff they have to give you. Most will be more than happy to dump stuff on you that's too good to throw away but they don't like anymore or that they have too much of.
That should get you set up with enough kitchenware and bath and bedding stuff so you don't have to buy any. It won't match but will save you a ton of money. You can replace it as you can afford to.
Also, before buying new, hit yard sales, flea markets, estate auctions, etc. for furniture and odds and ends you need. Cheaper and more fun than department store shopping.
The day you move in, take with you toilet paper and paper towels.
If the windows don't have miniblinds, you'll also need curtains or coverings of some sort. Buy cheap curtain rods and a couple of flat sheets on sale or use what you were given. Run the rod through the hem and hang it up on a couple of nails. Worry about the fancy stuff later.

BUY??

When I got my first place I inherited everything I needed from friends and relatives. What I didn't get I found.

End table? 2x2 piece of plywood and a bucket full of rocks!

THe only things you should have to buy: TV and stereo.

I had 2 couches, 2 fridges (I kept the better of the two and sold the other for $20) a table and some chairs, a nice coffee table 3 desks and full size bed, all hand me downs.

yes , it always a good idea to have lots of beer around , specially during the move . All people love beer . You can also convince people to help you move if you offer beer . Seriously though , you might want to get pictures and posters to decorate . Also good idea to get some sort of floor rug in the living room , where the common area or guest will be .

The suggestions in the thread are good ones, but my suggestion is to keep the first list as short as possible, perhaps 10-12 things.

Your time, money and space are not unlimited. You can always go get more things, but I think it better to live in the place a few days or a week. Don't fill up your apartment with a lot of crap you think you'll need but don't. There will be many items you will want you can't think of now, so leave that to the future.

When you try to prepare for everything, you end up being under prepared for everything.
