I currently have my domain name with Network Solutions and it expires this July. Thinking of also switching to Aletia from Interland since this account expires at the smae time. Question: Should I just let Aletia handle the domain transfer along with opening the new account or have GoDaddy handle the domain transfer? I'm not sure if these items should go together or it's OK to use different avenues.
Thanks.

You should handle any domain changes yourself. It's easy enough to do with some registrars, especially if they have an online system like OpenSRS' Domain Manager.

I would strongly advise you handle your own transfer of registrar. You'll have to anyway if you are the admin contact. Once it has been transferred, should you move to another host, you'll only need to change the host server information, and they can supply you with that.

Thanks, Duster, for your response. I hope you don't mind me asking some questions about what you wrote. This is all new territory to me but I've been learning alot on this forum.
Do you mean I should not have my new hosting company re-register the domain name and go ahead and transfer it to themselves? I'm not sure I understand why that would be not a good thing to do.
I checked out the site OpenSRS and read what they do....this must be similar to GoDaddy? Is the purpose of having them take care of the domain name stuff is just to keep it tidy in case I want to leave my new hosting company at some future date? And that some hosting companies aren't "good" about transferring your domain name to another company? Is OpenSRS your top choice for this service?
Thank you.

Peg, forget about OpenSRS for a second as that will only confuse you. If you are interested in godaddy, then you should go to godaddy's site and submit for a transfer to them. I'm not certain if they require you to fax somethingor not, but regardless, they will handle the transfer from NetSol for you.

Switching hosts is as easy as changing the nameservers at your new registrar. Ask your new host for their nameservers (though often this info is on theri site, or emailed to you), and then change the info (at godaddy once the transfer takes place - which can take up to two weeks).

Thanks, Chicken. I started the transfer process with GoDaddy today.
