Sesran 05-12-2001, 02:31 PM You would need to define your idea of "top" or "big" *Most clients? *Best Server? *Best support? *Most profit? As it has been mentioned in the forums, the so called top hosts are the ones willing to spend the most on advertising, but that does not mean they are the best. Just like AOL, they are the Biggest ISP, but most definitely not the best. Verio is big, but not the best. JBIZ718 05-12-2001, 04:09 PM In regards to your question, are you looking for the public ones or the private ones. And what is your top issue. # of clients or support. For example: ***** is ranked as a Top hosting company, but many on this board and worldwide would beg to differ. Please clearify Joe GeorgeC 05-12-2001, 04:30 PM I think he meant in terms of size/ market capitalization. Exodus is one of them I know. Phoenix 05-12-2001, 08:07 PM Numero uno in the industry is Conxion. They provide the best dedicated HA hosting using clustered servers and the fees are ungodly high. Few people have heard of them, but they are well-respected, their 100% guarantee for an automatic refund for 25 + seconds of downtime/ per month is the best in the industry, but they are Microsoft's host, and if you've downloaded a piece of software from them, or a patch, it probably came from Conxion. Verio isn't really a hosting company, they provide web hosting (most ISP's do) but it isn't their core business or core competency, connectivity is. JTY 05-12-2001, 10:10 PM OLM is ranked as one of the largest web hosts.... as that is all they do... ksstudio 05-12-2001, 10:58 PM Just some referrences to you: Top Host - Top 25 Host: http://www.tophosts.com/pages/top25/ Top9.com http://www.top9.com/internet_services/resources_services/e_commerce_design.html :) smelialichu 05-13-2001, 01:20 PM I'm rather keen on jaguar pc. luxor 05-13-2001, 03:41 PM I've used Interland in the past. They have over 100,000 accounts. Valueweb is pretty big also, and has been around since as long as I can remember. Webdude 05-13-2001, 06:43 PM I beg to differ about OLM. They only host about 1,000 servers. Thats an estimate, it was 600 last time I asked them. I left OLM because of the crap that was going on there. They are totally inflexible, support isnt all that good for server holders, the lease servers but dont let you colo your own. Last but not least, they have opened another Data Center and are competing with themselves. Instead of going after new customers, they are trying to get each others. Their prices are high, and they charge too much for over bandwidth. You also dont have any access to anyone "on location" where your server is. My average downtime if a server was locked up was 3 hours before someone got back there to reboot it. They claim they monitor it all, but they never knew a server was down till I told them. Half the time they rebooted the wrong machine. So if you goto bed at midnight, server for some oddbal reason gets too many processes and stops responding at 3AM, and you get up at 8AM. The server will still be down. You call or email as soon as you know about it, tack on about another 3 hours before someone actually reboots it. Their support is just a Front to make it look like they offer great support. However, if you have a server there, it does you no good. Whoever you talk to will say they have to forward your problem to an Admin. They way they charge things sucks too. If you run out of space and need another hard drive, they charge you for that too. About an additional $100 per month for an additional 30 gig scsi drive. No, I would never recommend OLM to anyone. The only two good things I can really say about them is that their own uptime is excellent and Matt in sales really tries to meet your needs. cahostnet 05-14-2001, 11:04 AM For me, the best in anything is what you think best means. What's best for someone will be bad for someone else. It's what you perceive it's best. Everyone have their own requirements. Anyone can be the TOP or the BEST if they pay for it. Remember how advertising work. The more you pay the more attention you get. I don't get caught in those contests. If you want to find out who's the best then ask their customers. As the company questions about what you're looking for and then give them a try to find out yourself. I think that's the best way to find out if a company is the best. If people like you are ranking a company to be the best then that's one thing. klisis 05-14-2001, 11:18 AM Originally posted by smelialichu I'm rather keen on jaguar pc. Hehe, I am with you. |
