Hello all, whats a realy good ping for an IP test, would anyone mind telling me?

I got this from ServerOutSource:

Reply from 207.***.*.*: bytes=32 time=137ms TTL 242
Reply from 207.***.*.*: bytes=32 time=137ms TTL 242
Reply from 207.***.*.*: bytes=32 time=136ms TTL 242
Reply from 207.***.*.*: bytes=32 time=136ms TTL 242

Is this good or bad.

I got this from ServerBroker:

Reply from 207.***.*.*: bytes=32 time=120ms TTL 242
Reply from 207.***.*.*: bytes=32 time=116ms TTL 242
Reply from 207.***.*.*: bytes=32 time=120ms TTL 242
Reply from 207.***.*.*: bytes=32 time=119ms TTL 242

And I am just waiting from a reply from ThePlanet to get a ping of them, what sort of ping should I be looking for? say around 100ms

Regards

Steve

Steve,

From the UK, 100 would be good, 120 to 150 pretty usual for East Coast US, 170 ish for mid-US and 200-ish for West Coast.

Remember ping is not really a performance indicator -- it just gives you some kind of clue.

surly this depends on connection? dial up with modem will be slower then 512 cable.

Also depends on what part of the US you are connecting to and what backbone you are connecting over.

I am connecting with 512 cable from london, my server is with Nocster and is about 90-100 but if i went with host in NAC then i would get ping of 80-90 with less hops.

Both are in same region of US

I don't think that the type of connectivity you have (modem, DSL...) makes much difference to ping times. Both Nac and Nocster have good pings from UK.

Your connection does make a difference. With 56k modem I used to get 240ms ping to our servers in USA, with 512k ADSL I get around 130ms.

And if any of you have played online gaming you will surely see the different in pings.
