View Full Version : Any recommendations
Renaissance 01-24-2003, 03:08 PM Hi,
I have a site which I want to move to a new web hosting company because the one which I am currently using (FeaturePrice) is totally unsatisfactory.
I need a fair amount of web space and bandwidth as my site uses pretty large Flash files. Also, I need PHP and MySQL for my forum.
Because of the size of the Flash files, speed is absolutely critical.
Have you any suggestions based on your experience with the various web hosting companies?
Thanks.

What's a fair amount of space and bandwidth to you? Most hosts can accommodate your needs but you need to be more specific.
Have any others in mind yet? If so, let us know and perhaps we can give you some feed back on them.
Renaissance 01-24-2003, 03:29 PM Hi Curtis H,
Thanks for responding.
In terms of web space, 50 Mb would probably be safe but a little more would not hurt.
In terms of bandwidth, I would prefer 10 Gb or higher if possible but something a little less would probably still be alright.
However, the factor which I am particularly concerned with is speed as my Flash files range from 100 Kb to 400 Kb in size.
I appreciate the help. Thanks.
Curtis H. 01-24-2003, 03:39 PM I've used Powersurge.net (http://www.powersurge.net) in the past and they were and still are great from what I experienced and heard. They may be a bit to pricey for you though. Not sure as you did not mention any kind of budget.
I currently use Myacen (http://www.myacen.com) and are happy but I'm not exactly sure what your expectations regarding server speed are. Feel free to join their forums and ask themselves and members. Sure they will be willing to help.
There are a couple other hosts I could mention but I prefer to mention ones I have direct relations with. I do have another host but support and client treatment has changed recently though they are still a good company to host with.

Thanks.
I appreciate the help.
da_php_guru 01-24-2003, 04:54 PM Hi,
My current host is CyrixNET ( http://www.cyrixnet.com/ ), I have 2,000 MB yep, thats 2 GB of space, 20,000 MB, yep 20 GB of space, :) and best part My accounts come with Cpanel5, and I only pay 19.95$/M.
Their cheapest plan is 1,000 MB of space and 10,000MB of b/w with panel5, cost is $9.95/M.
They are great host, friend phone support, which is unlikely on most hosts, and fast service.
They have a FREE Trial, so no paying at first signup.
You might like that.
:)
Renaissance 01-24-2003, 05:29 PM Hi da_php_guru,
Thanks.
da_php_guru 01-24-2003, 05:33 PM no prob == i noticed some people arent too happy about posting cyrixNET, could it be they own hosting companies and cannot beat their prices per service?
just letting the world know,
Curtis H. 01-24-2003, 06:09 PM Hate to go off topic and I apologize to Renaissance for doing so as he seems to be a very polite gentleman.
da_php_guru, just for the record, I am not a host and while I do like certain companies, I don't come on to a forum and drop their link in every post I make. Especially when it has nothing to do with the original topic at hand.
"Just letting you know" ;)
Renaissance 01-24-2003, 08:31 PM Hi Curtis H,
Thanks for the kind comment about me. :)
I appreciate your help with my question.
Following your suggestions, I looked up Powersurge and their plans looked impressive but, as you correctly pointed out, it is a little pricey, particularly for a site that is going to be used for a hobby as opposed to a business site.
I also looked up Myacen and it too looks pretty impressive. I also noticed that the comments about it on this forum seem almost uniformly positive.
I intend to look more closely at the Myacen forum as well.
Thanks again for your help.
