View Full Version : Don't use *****!
Jovian 05-11-2001, 02:53 PM Hello
My company has been with *****.com since December of last year. Unfortunately we are onm a virtual server.
During that period:
- We have asked to move to a different machine 3 times,
- I have called in at least 3 times a week about not having http, ftp, smtp or pop access.
- Call wait times have averaged around 52 minutes.
- Large number of staff not informed of problems.
- Almost impossible to talk to anyone who can give a definitive answer.
- Only 18% of problems get posted to the "Network Status" page.
- most tech members suffer from the "I can see it on the network so it must be fine" syndrom.
Basically stay away from them,.. They BLOW!
I am beginning to believe they have a strategy to get people to not call in by making it unbearably difficult. After such long wait times and talking to too many idiots I dread calling! It is only noon my time and I have called 9 times in the last three days so I have had enough!
GRRRRR! so much anger to vent!
Why then, you ask, do we stay..
I can't get my boss to cough up the money to move!
Damn recession.
Ok I'll stop now
(SH)Saeed 05-11-2001, 03:01 PM Jovian, if you browse this forum you will not find one good post about *****. There are many good and reliable hosts out there that are cheaper than *****. I suggest you moce ASAP!
Here are some hosts:
http://www.tera-byte.com/
http://www.weinbar.com/
http://www.site5.com/
http://www.wizardhosting.com/
http://www.hostrocket.com/
Good luck!
Another one screwed by sigh host. These posts are like a broken record, I guess people are in too much of a hurry to do any research and get blinded by what appears to be a good deal. Well, from i've seen/heard it'll probably cost your boss more from loss of business and potential billing 'mistakes' than it would to get the hell out of there immeditately!
xFastener 05-11-2001, 08:02 PM im not sure about ***** hosting but i know a guy who rented a t1 line with them for a really cheap price and he hasnt had a problem yet so maybe their good at some things but not for others
Yet.. That'd be the key word here.
Note the many posts on this company as just a hint of things to come. ;)
MCHost-Marc 05-11-2001, 11:07 PM I've been with ***** too; about a year ago. Back then the support was 'okay' ...never great . But then it just got worse every day, for tech requests it took about a week to get a reply, and when i cancelled, they kept billing me for 2 months, kept sending me eMails 'trying to get me back' as their customer - and in the end i had to change my credit card number.
Dont go with ***** - your site is probably in better hands on your neighbour's 56K :D

good advice can never be said enough times... :D
although couple of my friends love *****... for some very very odd reason... they experience problems from time to time yet I can never convince them to stay away from *****. *cough*one'sevenaresellerfor******cough*
graflin 06-29-2001, 11:31 PM Hi guys, my first post here, so I hope I'm not too far offtopic. I too have had recent problems with tech support (it's non-existance) at *****. But I have not had any problems with their up-time. I have been with them for a year now. Tech support was quite good at first. But it has taken a noticable decline in the past few months. However, I think I have a pretty good deal with them:
1 Gig space (currently using 500 megs of it - I transfer a lot of audio files)
Unlimited xfer (not really, but good enough for me)
RealAudio server
Unix
Plenty of e-mail redirects
$27/mo + $5 for each fake IP (I have 2)
If some one offers a similar deal, I haven't found it. Any comments or suggestions.
Thanks
Rebel 06-30-2001, 12:33 AM What's with all the ***** hate?? I too have been with ***** since December, and they only managed to lose our site mysql database 2 times. However, I have had great service with them, and never had to wait for more than 10 minutes. I don't hate them, but I don't love them either. =P
Chicken 06-30-2001, 04:10 AM First, everone note the thread is from 05-11-2001 (not too old but...).
Second,

Welcome to WHT! I suggest you start a new thread asking this (copy & paste your message and we'll kill off this one), as it is mixed in with another topic. You'll get better replies.

Fake IPs with ***** allow me to set up a folder within my primary domain and have another domain name directed to that folder. So, for example, from folders within my primary domain (graflin.com) I also serve content for two other domains (boothseating.com and reallystereo.com) which do not have their own unique IPs. Some one typing in "boothseating.com" will be directed to a subfolder in "graflin.com." The restriction is that these count towards the space allocation of my primary IP. Hope this is clear.
Chicken 07-01-2001, 12:10 PM That's interesting terminology :D Just wondering, was that your creation or something they told you?
WildWayz 07-01-2001, 05:44 PM its something they tell u :)
I use to have a dedicated server with them, and fakeip was a pain in the arse to do.
It creates an index.cgi file in your root html dir, which they have set up to be read first.
Also u have to use their park domain bit too.
All in all it is cheesey and crap =)
Much better if they would use proper domain parking.

timbo 07-02-2001, 07:05 AM I used them back in 1998-2000 for my http://www.anthems.com site - WHAT a mistake! I even went through that whole week of downtime.....yikes!
(The reason I went with them then was at the time there was nobody else offering the same amount of space and bandwidth as they did.....)
I didn't move sooner because I had 600megs worth of RealAudio files on the server (and having to download them all on a 56k modem was a nightmare!)
I moved to Liquidweb last year and so far they have been okay....much better support. Still not perfect, but good for the price.
So. Avoid *****. Please, at all costs. 0 Support. Bad Uptime. TERRIBLE billing support.
Tim
Furton 07-02-2001, 09:45 AM I used to have one of those "special" virtual servers with *****, I enquired about creating a sub-domain with their tech support, insted they told me how to create a new folder. Account cancelled nearly straight away:)

Why dont I believe you at all? You must have a very simple web site that require no maintenance at all.

well, it's not like i have a dedicated server or anything. i have a shared hosting account because i have a personal site. the shared hosting account works fine. i have a bunch of sites on my site and we all do fine. the front page is nothing worth looking at. it's all about the other sites within my site.
and my site does need a lot of maintenance. i update it everyday. so BLAH!
I dont believe that you can get through to tech support in uder two minutes when most people cant get through in under 2 HOURS! It takes people over a week to get answers to reponses to a trouble ticket alone!
timbo 07-02-2001, 04:28 PM Actually, It once took 2 weeks for a support reply for me ;)
Even little things like setting up sub domains on the account was a major pain in the neck - they couldn't even work out how to do it properly -- plus they only installed PHP4 quite recently...... (despite my many pleads way back when!)
They are, as we say in England, PANTS!
