View Full Version : Best service provider for new RaQ 4i ...
afriq 05-11-2001, 06:17 AM Hi there,
I'm new to this forum, and need some advice before ordering my first RaQ 4i ...
I've looked at a number of suppliers, and narrowed the search down to the following (Dialtone Internet just missed the boat, they are too expensive):
- CobaltRack
- Rackshack
- 4Webhost
The following aspects are important:
- reliability & redundancy (network, data center)
- warranty (swop-out in case of hardware failure)
- network performance
- value for money (our currency is fairly weak against the USD)
- support (serious mishaps only)
- reseller options
We ( Host24.com (http://host24.com) ) are looking at moving 80 domains, with 10 using mySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and have a budget of about $100-$250/month.
Please be objective, and provide first hand information only.
Much apreciated ;)
Johan
ps - I'm currently sharing a FreeBSD server at Virtualis, but after the merger with Adgrafix we are thinking of pulling out ...
netastic 05-11-2001, 09:26 AM i have been using 4webhost since Jan and have been happy. i have only noticed being unable to access my server for about 20 minutes during this time. i have also only noticed that the network was slow for part of one day. i can't remember whether it was for 30 minutes or a few hours. the tech support has been good considering that i don't expect much for the low prices i am paying. i mainly use this BB and 4webhost's BB for tech support. overall i would have to say that i am very happy with 4webhost.
conversly i have heard of people on this list who have had troubles with Rackshack and Cobaltrack. you might want to look into the archives to see more details on these companies.
IMHO
I use rackshack. They have great rates but the tech support is limited. If your linux saavy, they are great. I rarely need their tech support, so I have not had any problems. My server was up and running in about an hour.
Rackshack Pricing
Rackshack's web site is a bit disorganized. Go through all of the options, specials, etc. to find the machine that you need. In some places, there are basically the same options but at different prices. Sometimes as much as 10% different.
alexstjo 05-11-2001, 11:31 PM It is great to see another VR here! I am too pulling out of Virtualis after what is going on, I know it will only going to get more and more bad.
Alex
Hi Johann,
glad to see you here, fellow XVIOM... Here's Spain's XVIOM. I've moved all of my customers into a dedicated server at 4Webspace.
Till now, the service has been reliable, tech support is not very fast, but never got nonsense answers from them.
Mail me if you need further details.
Daniel

i get response in 10 min every time

kickster 05-13-2001, 01:40 AM 4webspace is the best place for raq servers. dont let Raqshack.net prices fool you.
They charge you $30 everymonth for extra ram there is extra charge for support. They also charge you taxes even if you are not a USA based company.
Wow, that's sucks.
Adad, have you try their chat room to ask for support? You can get an instant reply from them there.
avara 05-13-2001, 04:21 AM I have been a Rackshack customer for about 3 weeks now.
When they first set up my server, I could not access it. They then set me up with another server, which I could access. However, this changed my IP address, which has caused problems I will not go into here.
After signing up, I requested 4 additional IP addresses to run a DNS server as well as a few sites with anonymous FTP. That was 2-3 weeks ago, and there has been no reply at all. I opened a trouble ticket regarding this, and it simply disappeared from the members area with no response apart from "working on it".
Luckily, I don't need tech support -- don't want to find out how bad it is. :)
All that said, I would recommend them because of the speed of their network, and their network uptime is very good. For the price, I wouldn't expect good support anyway.
kickster 05-13-2001, 11:55 AM Price is not low!!!
129+ 275 setup fee+ %8 taxes I rather pay 199 to 4webspace and get quality service when needed.
WTFHosting 05-13-2001, 03:05 PM You'll want to take CobaltRack off your potential list. You can find more info by searching the forum for "cobaltrack" or http://www.cobaltracksucks.com
afriq 05-14-2001, 03:57 AM Thank you for all the replies - it was quite helpful:)
Ok - I've decided in the end to go for Rackshack.net.
As most of you indicated, their support might not be the most responsive, but I'm ok as far as Linux goes, and their pricing cannot be beaten (given a 3 month or longer stay with them).
The server was ready for use immediately after I've placed the order, but the jury is still out as far as their post-sales support go. The next step is to get our name servers sorted out.
Will keep you posted!
Johan
ps - with this forum (and the Cobalt lists) one might never need their support (unless the unit itself, or the network) fails :)
