Jason, if you want to take over the cc processing of my US$ sales, that would be a God send. It might also help me actually pay you for my server leases which, with the hostcharge fiasco, is a real problem.

Wow this is an interesting poll. Anyone charging over $1,000 per month would come out cheaper with a real merchant account yet some people bill 2, 5, 10,000 a month through a third party.

I'm wondering if the larger numbers are from non US companies because that would make more sense. I can't wait till more people vote. I may have to start selling third party accounts.

I didn't vote by the way, I use a regular merchant account.

Yeah coz. 3rd party processor are more often than not more easy to work with and reliable...some of the real merchant account processors are really crappy out. there..2checkout and propay are the two I really feel good about. And i know of lot's of people who process a lot more than 1k and still aren't willing change as of yet.

One thing I have really been wondering about is propay..why is it talked about so rarely...looks like a real good option to me..never really tried though?

Real Merchant accounts not as reliable? I've never heard that. As for easy to work with, if you mean it's easier to get a third party account than I totally agree.

I have to admit though that there are a ton of companies that are offering real merchant accounts that do not follow Visa and MasterCard regulations and have shady business practices. That's why I suggest going directly to a bank.

All merchant accounts are underwritten by banks. Banks are highly regulated whereas ISO's (Independant Sales Organizations) that sign up to resell for banks are free to create their own terms for accounts such as long contracts that are hard to get out of and high fees and penalties for doing so.

Everyone has a certain way they like to do business, but I can't see paying more money for a third party account than having a real merchant account.

3rd party = free advanced fraud screening

3rd party = MUCH more leniant regarding chargebacks (merchant accounts can be shut down and all your funds frozen for as little as a 1.5% chargeback rate in most cases)

The same thing applies. Third party processors have a merchant account, and hopefully a good working relationship with their bank and their retailers. They too can lose their merchant accounts if things get out of hand, which affects everyone.

We had a good one here in Australia go under last year.

I dunno about anybody else, but our 3rd party processor (2checkout) is just sitting there as a backup - we use a merchant account for the day to day stuff. The reason I went and got one were the threads about merchant accounts getting cancelled after like 1 chargeback

Most likely be heading over to WorldPay. I still like the outsourced payment model like Paysystems etc.

The ST George did the right thing by us. They were aware of the problems with Paysystems from at least one other host. So they got us up and running and we have processing going through eway now. The ST George are building their own commercial processing gateway as well, but that's a while off. They have provided us with enough specs to build our own API now though, so we'll drop eway soon as well and deal direct with the bank.

So far, I would recommend the ST George. We have other banking through them, but their ecom people are very good.
