View Full Version : Looking for Dirt Cheap, economy class hosting

Hey, I'm looking for some dirt cheap hosting. I've found some places that look reliable around 7 dollars, and I've found some places that get down to 4 dollars but then I start to worry about their reliablility.

I'm hoping I can get a good rate for committing to a long haul. IE: registering for a year and getting a yearly rate, instead of a monthly rate.

Really, I don't need too much. A few megabytes of storage, some download ability, it's a low traffic, personal site. All I really want is FTP access.

With or without scripting language. I'd have to lean towards with, but I'm still open to suggestions. The scripting would be simple, asp, or php. (I'm no expert)

Flash capability? Media streaming? I might let people download some music off there, but that's not too important.

Again, I'm trying to find a way to spend under 50 bucks in a year, get a few essential features, but still have something reliable.

Oh, BTW, for the record I've already registered a domain name. So I'm looking to shed a few dollars off the price by getting only the hosting.

Sorry about that, still new here.

I mean, I guess I'm asking if it's possible to get quality. It's like, I can pay 8 bucks, even 12 bucks for quality... but they give me much more than what I need. I only really need half of what they describe.

www.nocster.com/

Look at their virtual plans, look at the first one, I think it's exactly what you're looking for..

To bad nocster charges setup fees.

I'd suggest giving Myacen a look. They have a plan that fits your budget along with a support forum which comes in handy. Myacen Plans (http://www.myacen.com/virtualhosting.html).

If you don't need much in the way of support and don't mind paying for a year, Solidinternet.com (http://solidinternet.com) has even better plans for less. Same company.

dharmony: Try http://www.sectorlink.com . They're reasonably priced (read: dirt cheap by the standards you've proposed :) ), very reliable, and on the rare occasions I have needed support from them for myself or my clients, they have responded within 1 hour. They also allow for scripting and depending on the plan you get, media streaming (although I'd be careful with stuff like that. It can suck up the bandwidth on your dirt cheap host and cause additional charges that cause you to put a fifteenth mortgage on your house and live in a cardboard box sucking Cheez Whiz out of a jar through a straw.)

discount-hosting.com

Really cheap. Great uptime. One plan, no options and no technical support.

Wow, Gordo, I tip my hat to you. Just when I thought low-class low-cost hosting has hit rock bottom, you dig that bad boy up. I am in awe. (Does anyone actually sign up for stuff like that?)

I can't wait until someone comes on here and uses his/her first post to claim (s)he got ripped off. I'm gonna have a field day with that post.

Hi,

Since you don't want to pay for all the package you won't use why don't you find a good provider who allows custom plans? I'm sure most do and if not you could email their sales department and make a request ...

Good luck.

I've used D-H for a while with one client who wanted dirt cheap but reliable. They are super cheap at $10/yr. You don't get a lot (no access to log files, very stingy customer service, nothing fancy). Break their rules and they remove your site. Their forum is minimally helpful.

But you get a decent storage/bandwidth for a beginner account, PHP, and FTP.

The best part is that they are incredibly reliable, down very infrequently and then only for a few minutes. They'd probably go down less frequently because they don't run a lot of services on the servers: less to boogle the system.

I have a domain with www.unitedhosting.co.uk at $6/month which is inexpensive and incredible value (by no means "economy class"). It includes PHP and a MySQL database (rare at this cost) and they really care about their customers.

Their servers are in the US, and they bill in $, I believe, so it should not matter about them being a UK company if you are based in the US.

Thanks for the hat tip. Yep, I signed up nine months ago. Based upon an hourly monitoring service, the last downtime was prior to August 26.

I find their attitude refreshing. Many hosts promise things they don't deliver. D-H promises nothing except no technical support and a zero tolerance if you break their rules.

I had another experience with discount-hosting today. I'm sure it will continue on for another day or two, since they are slow to respond. They may respond to the forum only during business hours in France. I'm not sure about that.

It seems there is a limit to the size of attachments or emails you can send through their accounts. An email under 2 MB got bounced today. It was an email with a Word doc attached. Yeah, Word docs are often bloated, but this is normal business, nothing outrageous.

I've been dealing with a hosting company (US) with which I've been quite happy, but recently one of the sites requies some online aps which are going to eat up about 1 gig or more of space, so I was all set to colocate a dedicated server. A friend in Finland said to check out webhostingtalk.com, because virtual hosts could be much cheaper than I'd been used to.

Mongo a bongo! He was right. Thanks to all for these tips. :)

You can go with Myacen. They are good. Just read their policies or ask in the forums before you sign with them for requirements.

Here's two other super cheap hosts that may have merit, if you don't need much bw. e-rice.net and ripplehost.com

I have not used either, but make my suggestions based upon reading their discussion boards.

Go visit the request forums, and you'll see that half the time, people end up paying for stuff they don't use. Some web users might just want to get what they want for the money they have.

Not everyone has mucho mucho dollars to spend on web hosting every month. So maybe the uber-cheap hosts aren't great, but their existence means that a lot of people who otherwise couldn't afford to can get their sites online have the chance to.

I agree that custom plans are probably the way to go, if you're looking for something simpler. I hope you find what you're looking for :)

They have good support and a great price, their 500 meg plan with oscommerce, 6 months free, then 6.95 per month. You do not have to install the oscommerce. Check it out. http://addaction.net. I have been using them since september and they do have good support.
