View Full Version : Webhosts signatures.
-Edward- 05-10-2001, 11:29 AM Don't you think some of the webhosts signatures here are getting a bit over board? Magazines charge a lotta money for what some of these hosts have as signatures and i think it ruins the board.
Example -
--------------
MyHosting.Com - www.MyHosting.Com
Domain Regisration - $14.95 a year
Webhosting - 100mb 10gb transfer php,cgi etc etc $9.99 a month
Server Specs - 850 MHZ, 512mb ram blah blah.
-------------
I think they should only be able to have there website address and email in the signature. Why not just let them put there webpage in an <iframe> in the signature they might as well.
look at this hosts ksstudios -
[ $7.65 ] [ $9.65 ] [ $16.65 ] [ $19.65 ] [ $24.65 ]
Pentium III 866Mhz + 512MB RAM server
$14.95 Domain Registration
30 Days Money Back Guarantee
Then look at Toons -

I know which one i prefer seeing and its not ksstudios.
XTStrike 05-10-2001, 11:50 AM I tend to agree with you there, if people want to see the adverts they will go to the advertisement forum !
maybe this could be an addition to the rules?
"hosts selling goods or sevices to members/guests of WHT are not entitled to use sales related signatures, any sales related signatures are limited to the URL and company name of the host"
how does that sound?, im hopeless at "contract" related wording, but maybe someone can come up with something appropriate :-)
Phoenix 05-10-2001, 03:47 PM I've been tinkering with my own signature line. The thought of putting prices and such in it, never crossed my mind.
I just put the year we started doing web hosting and a brief mention of the sort of facility we are.
But then I'm not here to sell services, as ours are rather pricey, I'm here to interact with my peers, share information, ask and answer questions. I included the information I did in my signature because it indicates just the sort of company I work for.
My personal idea for standard sales-oriented signature would be
Name
Title
Hosting Company Name
URL
company slogan or favorite personal joke
But getting compliance for signatures in a UBB is next to impossible. It's a nice idea, but I don't see that it will work. Not everyone is going to comply, there will still be sales pitches in posts.
Do what I do, ignore them.
Kaith Sutai-Rustaz 05-10-2001, 04:30 PM Same here. I personally have a problem with those folks who post the "me too" and have a 40 line sig. Helpful or not, its like, "why?"
I dont mind the shorter ones, as half the time its how I find good info. :)
Course, mine are usually just something catchy I liked. :) May add the biz tag lines later. When I stop with the 17-20 hr days that is. :D

I must admit to enjoying yours, any signature that has gunfire in it, automatically rules!
cperciva 05-10-2001, 05:58 PM I think one thing which is certain is that .sigs aren't being used for their intended purpose. The idea behind .sigs was to allow people to supply contact or biographical information (or maybe an amusing quote); a website URL is one thing but a listing of hosting plans is quite another.
I'm not entirely certain how that can be stopped without creating some very vague "if the mods don't like it" rules; I would say, though, that banning color from .sigs would be a good first step.
Duster 05-10-2001, 06:37 PM I agree. A few hosts have gone overboard lately.
Setting the rules is easy enough and need not be vague. Allowing contact information and a short description, within the 4 line maximum, is permissible. Prices and plan descriptions is not. The use of color is a separate matter that should be considered. Perhaps it too should be banned in signatures.
Red Circle Host 05-10-2001, 07:15 PM WHT need money?
How about they have to pay to have there signature say maybe like 0.10 a letter?IONNO just a thought!
Blast! That's what I forgot to address in the rules.
IMVHO, I'd rather see :
1. No prices.
2. No colors.
3. Same font size (i.e. 2 or smaller).
I don't particularly want to go overboard on this considering this hasn't been much of a problem previously, but I do agree clear guidelines will need to be added in.................
dektong 05-11-2001, 01:18 AM I can understand having no prices on the signature... but, what's really wrong with having colors?
cheers,
edude 05-11-2001, 01:23 AM Yes whats wrong with colour? they seem to catch the eye here, nearly every thing is grey.

People usually don't use colors in their posts; allowing colorful ads^H^H^Hsigs means that at first glance the only things you notice are the sigs.
Sigs are supposed to be of lesser importance than the text to which they are attached, so having them stand out is a bit wierd.
Phoenix 05-11-2001, 10:12 AM i've noticed one signature in particular that is in 4 different colors, one for each line. That's going a little overboard.

The new forum rules are out so I think some people will have to change their sigs.
SI-Chris 05-11-2001, 04:08 PM I think the award for biggest sig goes to BurstNET at the end of this post: http://webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1298&perpage=20&pagenumber=2

Not just our sigs, but our avatars as well. Can't use company logos anymore. The nice thing about using your company logo is that you know that it's unlikely that someone else will be using the same avatar as you (unless more than one person from the same company post here). So you can find your last post in a busy thread easily.
I think I have an idea...

Before they go away forever, how about giving awards to signatures.
Most kewl
Most annoying
Longest
Most obscure
any more suggestions?
I chose a new avatar that's a play on my name. The Phoenix, was also known as the Firebird, so my avatar is the Pontiac Firebird logo.
All I need now is a mullet.

Zero Wing Rules! Even though I don't need it anymore, with my own server to play with, I maintain an account at the NYC internet provider Panix.
Panix has been around for years, and remains home to many old-school geeks. They're also one of the best providers of shell accounts, by the way, but that's not really the point. One of the longstanding traditions at Panix is the April Fools Day joke (I'm tempted to delve into a few from past years, but I'll refrain in order to finally get to the point). This year was no exception; the banner ad at the top of the panix.com home page was replaced in a joking attempt to make it look as if the server had been cracked.
The message on the replacement banner was "Panix: All your shell user are belong to us!"
TheComputerGuy 05-11-2001, 08:39 PM I love the sig about
keyboard not found press any key to continue,

Domenico 05-12-2001, 04:16 PM Come on guys, don't you think this thread is about erm... NOTHING ?
Just don't read it if you don't like it. I don't care really and it's quitte informative sometimes.
Next people start complaining about content of the posts. What? They allready do?
What is this world becoming too...

ksstudio 05-13-2001, 08:49 PM Just few sentences :-
1. Since there aren't any rules at this forum at the moment stated that color sigs and some info regarding my company are not allowed....
===> am I doing anything wrong?
2. I will change my sigs immediately if the new rules not allowed me to do so
3. My sigs might be "not comfortable" to others since it is more eye catching than others, but you know... i double my traffic and have more signups after I change my sigs
4. I am not posting nounces / spamming, i do help other newbies also ... perhaps most of my post
:karate: :karate: :karate:
ksstudio 05-13-2001, 08:58 PM Everyone is allowed a maximum of 4 lines for their signature - this is to ensure that no 'sneaky' advertising can take place, while ensuring everyone still has enough room to list vital contact details of themselves. The 4-line maximum is standard across other forums and Usenet groups on the Internet. No more than one color can be used in your signature and font size must be standard.
emmm... looks like i have to think for a new signature ..... when the new rules applies....
:D

Mmmm... Time for a poll I reckon.

Webdude 05-14-2001, 04:30 AM Well, requiring no pricing will be hard and I entirely disagree with it (of course). However, I do think it should be limited. The best way would be to limit it to 3 lines with a limit of max chars per line, and no html.
There. I just solved your problem for ya :D

I don't get it... why is this "hard"? Maybe "unpleasant for people who see this forum primarily as a place to attract new customers", but it certainly isn't hard.
Sigs are not intended as an advertising medium. Sigs are intended to represent the person making a post, not the company he works for.

I agree the intent shouldn't be advertising, but there's really nothing inherently wrong with company info as a means of identification. But like so many things, given an inch people have taken a mile until it's become distateful. From having a company name and url in the sig, now we have more and more info, hyperlinks to plan-specific signup pages, colors... I'm sure it it were possible people'd have their sigs playing sounds, or would use flash banners...
Why I don't like pricing in sigs...
"Dedicated server, $100/month!"
So, i'll click on the link, get to the site and see something like "$100/month for the first three months, $300 thereafter." I feel tricked when I see stuff like that, and this can be used and abused so much in a sig.
Just my opinion..
Webdude 05-14-2001, 06:18 PM Well, out of all the different forums I frequent, I have the same sig for them all. Why I said it would be hard....first, this is the only place the signatures have been question. But most places also have a limit on how many lines and chars you can use. That pretty much controls it.
Here, I'll give ya that many do go waaaay overboard, such as Burst does. Those guys need to grow up and show some professional restraint on stuff like that. So do some of the others.
Mine simply shows our normal plan, and links to our free hosting, pay hosting, and support forums. Personally, I think that is all thats needed and is the plain basics. I dont think colors should be used for the same reason as mentioned earlier by someone.
However, what are you going to do to stop it? Ban the $ sign? Jump the case of every new host that does it? More trouble than it's worth.
ksstudio 05-15-2001, 01:25 AM My New Sig. Is it OK?
Sorry for bringing too much troubles.
