View Full Version : Web-based e-mail: Everyone, OEMmail or ...?
BRossMac 05-10-2001, 08:45 AM I'm developing a small porta-type site for my local community and want to offer web-based e-mail. I'm looking for opinions on some of the services out there--Everyone.net, OEMmail, etc.
Any feedback would be helpful....

Jaiem 05-10-2001, 09:33 AM Webbox is pretty good. Service has improved a lot.
There's also a POP3 service (I forget the name at the moment - something like POP3MAIL or similar). It's no-frills but reliable.
I went with bigmailbox.com and it worked out fine.
skysenshi 05-10-2001, 10:13 AM I'm currently using Everyone.net, they have scheduled downtimes, though sometimes they forget to announce.
Also I don't like the fact that they fill just every possible space with ads. I think it's intrusive.
BigMailBox is worse, though.
Haven't tried the others.
ksstudio 05-10-2001, 10:47 AM We are using BigMailBox on one of our portal, it looks fine for us. Besides you can customise the templates to suite your site. It also got a set of templates for season like christmas..etc
You can also upgrade to a ads free version by paying little $$$ base on user you have per month
take a try http://www.bigmailbox.com
freakscene 05-10-2001, 11:28 AM Just FYI
Everyone.net (http://www.everyone.net) started offering an add-free option for $$ today.

I didn't use a template for our everyone.net (although there are ready-made templates for use). I used the exactly the same design that I used for the main site (the same HTML I created for the main page).
:)

I'm also looking for info on web-based email.
We've been providing web-based email as one of our value-added services to our clients for a couple of years now. We use Webmail, and it's not as feature rich as something like Hotmail or Yahoo's email client, so if anyone has any recommendations for a web-based mail application to run on our mail servers (not a branded 3rd party service), I'd appreciate a heads-up. Any trials, tribulations or successes you've experienced as a result of deploying same.
fruitsalad 05-10-2001, 02:21 PM I use portal services from http://www.outblaze.com

Is that using the Instant Portal (http://www.i-p.com) or outblaze directly?
fruitsalad 05-10-2001, 03:02 PM I've been using them for awhile now, and at the time I joined it was directly through outblaze as they had a stand at the Internet Exhibition in Sydney.
If you were to signup over the net however http://www.i-p.com would be the way to apply I believe.
AussieHosts 05-10-2001, 06:42 PM World Wide Messenger from www.worldwidecreations.com looks to be about the most customizable "hotmail" style script we have found.
Here's a preview of their latest version:

Wazeh 05-10-2001, 07:35 PM If one decides on ads-free solution, wouldn't it be cheaper to lease one of the cheap servers and deciate it for the email service?
The Prohacker 05-10-2001, 07:45 PM Wazeh,
Yes and no. It is sometimes cheaper to run your own scripts for this task, but if you have technical problems with the scripts its up to you to fix it......
Wazeh 05-11-2001, 01:05 AM sure prohacker. but even if one doesn't have the technical ability, I think they can get some custom solution from a web host and still save lots of money. That's if you will have a few thousand email users.
Emperador 05-11-2001, 10:03 PM Hi!
I think you should try with custom webmail scripts.
Personally, I prefer PHP/MySQL. Try NOCC, it's good
It's an opensource webmail system that runs completely on your site, with mysql on backend.
