View Full Version : Expired Domain Names
GregL 05-09-2001, 07:52 PM Hi,
I was checking out whois information for a domain registered with NSI and found something interesting.
It said:
Record expires on 22-Feb-2001.
Can someone explain to me why NSI hasn't dropped the domain yet? How long will they wait for payment from the old owners before I can register it?
Any info will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
patrickw 05-09-2001, 08:13 PM Hi,
I can explain how things are *SUPPOSED* to work, but with NetSol you never know....
The domain should be placed on hold for 40 days to give the registrant time to renew the domain. During this time, the domain should continue to work as usual.
45 days after the expiration date the domain should be deleted and available to register by anyone who wants it.
HOWEVER - NetSol is widely known to give "good" expired domains over to GreatDomains.com (which it owns) and they auction them off. The minimum bid on ANY domain (even ones that aren't so good) is $300.
I have been looking at a domain that expired in 1998 but is still not available. Come to find out, you can bid on it at GreatDomains.com.
I know for a fact that OpenSRS complies with the 45 day rule, but other registrars can pretty much do what they want, including auctioning off the domains with an after market service. They claim that this helps them recoup costs from non payment. To me, it sounds like they are trying to make a quick buck.
Scott 05-10-2001, 12:42 AM I have been keeping an eye on a domain name that expired in January 1999, it is not at GreatDomains and does not look as if it's going to be returned to the pool anytime soon. And yes, it was originally registered through Network Solutions.
avara 05-10-2001, 02:33 AM I once registered a domain name with Network Solutions when they were offering 3-month free registration. That was over a year ago, and now they actually renewed my domain!
They keep sending me invoices, but there is no chance of me paying -- I tried to cancel the domain name, but they wouldn't let me. I dont' mind, as it's their money, but still I'm really beginning to wonder....
Walter 05-10-2001, 03:42 AM There should be something done to registrars like NSI and REGISTER.COM who don't release expired domains to the public.
Maybe we should file complaints to Better Business B. or to ICANN? What do you think?
Two or three days ago, I use greatdomains.com to register an expired domain. Before I proceeded with the registration process, I looked up the whois and saw that the domain had expired for at least a month or so. In my error in judgement, I decided to register through greatdomains.com. I figured paying $50 is reasonable considering that it helped me find a name that I liked. I knew the $50 registration process could take weeks to complete, but I wasn't going to use their more expensive speedy registration service. Well, when I checked the whois two days later, the domain was re-registered by the previous owner. I wonder if greatdomains.com have notified the previous owner of my intent to acquire the domain. I find the timing to be questionable.
When using other registrars, I have no problems registering domains that had expired for much less time. The processes are usually instantly. That is, the whois would show that the domains are no longer available.
SepsisNet 05-10-2001, 04:07 AM While we're on this topic, I would like to ask if someone knows of a CGI script that runs in background (via crontab) every morning and evening, right about when NetSol's systems are updated and checks domains inputted from a seperate text file.
I had my eye on a excellent domain, and when it finally dropped, someone else snatched it before I could.
I don't want this to happen again. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Walter 05-10-2001, 04:43 AM Ok, just started a poll to cover expired domains...
GregL 05-10-2001, 09:16 AM Thanks for explaining this.
I kinda expected this as we are dealing with NSI here.
I remember it took me over three weeks to register my first domain with them. That was the first one and the last one. I've been using other registrars from then on and had absolutely no problems.
Thanks again for your replies.
P.S.: Everyone vote in the poll :)
cabalstudios 05-10-2001, 03:18 PM Hi,
I registered a domain with Networksolutions, and it was due to expire on the Record expires on 31-Mar-2001.
Which for me was ok, as there was no way I was going to Pay $70 for 2 years when I can get the domain for $19.95 for 2 years.
I'm still waiting for them to release the domain so that I can re-register with this other host, If anyone has any tips or ideas, on how to get this transferred to a different registrar without any additional costs please send me an email, all help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Walter 05-10-2001, 03:35 PM Cabalstudio, be careful! Don't let your domain expire! Either someone other will catch it or maybe NSI itself will hold it!
freakscene 05-10-2001, 03:39 PM they do send you notice before it expires don't they (network solutions)?
cabalstudios 05-10-2001, 03:40 PM So, your suggesting I pay the $70 per 2 years, rather than $19.95? and not risk loosing the domain.
The reason I suggested expiring the domain is because I have 2 that expired on the same day, and $140 for 2 years for 2 domains is a lot of money.
Please advise.
cabalstudios 05-10-2001, 03:41 PM Yes they have sent me many letters, advising of payment and expiry. ;)
TheOp 05-10-2001, 04:01 PM If the domain has expired you may not have any choice but to renew the domain with NSI. If they drop into a non-active status another registrar will not be able to complete a domain transfer. Domain transfers are only allowed on domains that are active with the registry.
I would suggest choosing a registrar that you are comfortable with and attempt to transfer the domain. usually if the transfer fails you are not charged. Transfer must be approved or rejected within 5 days of the request. If the transfer fails renew the domain with NSI or let it drop and pick it up with someone else (not recommended).
You can select from a list of active registrars from
http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html
cabalstudios 05-10-2001, 05:00 PM Is there any way to find out if the domain is in non-active state, I have just transferred the domain to a local registrar, tucows and excepted the transfer agreement, does that mean the transfer will go through, even though the domain is down for renewal.
Please Advise.

cabalstudios 05-12-2001, 10:46 PM Cheers TheOp,
I transferred my domain to Tucows, and all is now ok.
I only payed, £11 for 1 years renewal compared to NSIs $35.
Thanks once again,
