onlyreal 05-09-2001, 07:09 PM hey all
summer is coming in here and mosquitos start to emerge
they aremy room for getting their friends revenge :))
what are the best ways against them
i used sprays and some lectircal equipment but they still last :))
alpha 05-09-2001, 07:21 PM a Biochemical suit? :D
etLux 05-09-2001, 09:05 PM Wearing garments made of goat hair discourages them.
We are thinking of doing a new line of summerware products for this. Investors welcome.
They try to eat me alive every time I step outside.
cperciva 05-09-2001, 09:15 PM Isn't DDT the more effective way of killing mosquitos? IIRC you can spray a very small quantity onto your walls and any mosquitos which land on the walls will get killed.
Nicholas Brown 05-10-2001, 06:56 AM we dont really get mosquitos in the UK - Im more concerned over Wasps :bawling:
<vent>
I just hate them - I have a fear they will crawl down my shirt and keep stinging and stinging and stinging
</vent>
XTStrike 05-10-2001, 10:32 AM is it me or dont wasps die after they have stung once ?
Nicholas Brown 05-10-2001, 10:34 AM Bee's die after stinging you, not wasps (Im a Brit :D)
XTStrike 05-10-2001, 10:47 AM hmm, ok, heh, im a brit too :-) - (just not "nature" smart :-( )
heh, ive found a litle trick that works for most things with delicate wings:
Hair Spray
Lighter
a mixture of these two items is fairly deadly as a flame thrower and normally takes out flying insects in BULK !
bwahahahaha :D :D flamethrow:fairy:

Duster 05-10-2001, 05:29 PM One thing that helps with a lot of people is eating garlic. It makes you stink to mosquitoes and they won't come near you. I learned this years ago in Scouting and made sure I ate Italian food laced with garlic whenever a camping week end was coming up. It worked for me.
It also works for many dogs in repelling fleas.
An added benefit of the garlic is that it repels vampires, werewolves and evils spirits also. Too much, and it also repels friends and loved ones and anyone else whose olfactory sense is not damaged.

This explains much. Formerly desperately afflicted with an infestation of these pests, I have never had fleas once since I began eating garlic.
Red Circle Host 05-10-2001, 07:04 PM Hey!
You think you guys got it bad?HA! That doesn't even come close!I live in musqitio COUNTRY! We also have things called black flies (10x worse) I live in northern ontario. They are CRAZY up here.Hmmm cya!gotta go scratch those bites!:bawling:
Alan - Vox 05-11-2001, 01:28 PM Nicholas your fear actually happened to me.
Just as i sat down in my house i felt something on the back of my neck! I put my hand on it and sting right in the back of the neck and then it crawled down my shirt. I tried to pull my shirt off and sting again, ahhh. I eventually got my shirt off after being stung four times.
Aloha,
I spent a year living on Utila Islas DeBahia in Honduras
you want to talk about mosquitos when I would go hiking in the jungle
hehehhehehe
scarry
the thing that kept em off was long sleeve clothing soaked with 100% deet
not sure how good this is on your health but down there it worked ;)=
or move faster then them and they can not land on you
another trick is to keep a fan pointed at you
again the little guys try to land and get blown off ;)
OK this all might be of no help but ya never know
the other thing we used to use for sandflees is Avon Skin so Soft
I also found any thick heavy sunscreen aplyed very heavy works as they will land fall down adn they can not get up actually quite funny in a sad way ;)
Webdude 05-12-2001, 05:13 AM Heres something that works in most states. There is this stuff you can get at Walmarts garden center. I dont remember the name, but it is a black bottle with a red label. The content is 50% something (sorry, cant remember that either). Anyway, you put that into a bottle that connects to your water hose and spray it all over your house and yard. It keeps flies and mosquitoes away for about a week, or until the first rain anyway.
Down here in Texas though, the stuff dont work. We generally shoot them down with a .22 rifle and have bar-b-cued mosquitoe legs. Tastes like chicken.
Tim Greer 05-12-2001, 06:54 AM Webdude, I haven't heard of garlic before, but citris is a good repellant. There's some type of citris candles you can burn, assuming you don't have orange tree's around your immediate area.

That something is probably deet ( a nickname for a long chemical name - N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide). It is one of the most effective insect repellents known. It can be found im products with a concentration from 10% to 100%. It does tend to feel sticky and waxy at high concentrations, although it does well at keeping most insects away.
Citronella candles are another possibility, as are outdoor foggers (on days with little or no wind). Outdoor fans can help as well. A breeze of as little as 2mph can keep mosquitoes at bay.
Individual body chemistry varies so garlic does not work for everybody (nor does it work for all dogs). For those on whom it does work, it is a great way to repel bugs without having to be concerned with applying and reapplying chemical repellents.

Webdude 05-12-2001, 09:11 PM I dont know. I am going out to exchange a movie now. Got a screwed up cd. I am stopping by walmart on the way to pick some of that stuff up. I know what it looks like, but nothing else..LOL
I will give the name and ingredients when I get back. Ok, so my wife is going..LOL. Anyway, I dont think the ingredient is DEET, Citrus, or Garlic. This stuff actually kills them and their eggs. My experience is it lasts about a week and creates an insect shield wherever you spray it. DEET just repels them, not actually killing them. That to me really does no good. We have moist ground where they like to gather by millions in the grass. After spraying it the last time, I could see tons of dead mosquitoes and flies on the ground.
After all, the only good mosquitoe is a dead one. They make good fertalizer for your lawn too if you kill them in the grass like I do :-)
I dont know, it 'could' be DEET, but at a much heavier dosage. 50% is a lot.

That's not entirely true. In the Everglades (near Miami), the Seminole and Micossukee Indians throw saddles on them and give rides for a few dollars. It's a lot more interesting than the alligator wrestling.
Bungo 05-13-2001, 12:10 AM Citronella is very effective at detering mozzies. We purchase citronella candles from the local supermarket. You can also get the lotion.
SI-Chris 05-13-2001, 12:55 AM *This* is how you get rid of mosquitos: http://www.frontgate.com/pdp.jsp?prod_oid=305709&showarrow=no
Webdude 05-13-2001, 03:13 AM Wow, I dont think I wanna spend $1300 to fight mosquitoes..LOL.
Anyway, the Walmart my wife was going to shut down to to electricity going out during the storm. However, I found some interesting facts on the net.
Deet
Deet is by far the most commonly used insect repellent in the world. This is because it is the most effective repellent against mosquitoes and ticks. After researching hundreds of compounds, Deet (N, N-Diethyl-M-Toluamide) was selected by the USDA and the U.S. military as the most economical compound to use. After more than forty years of worldwide use, Deet has a remarkable record.
Permethrin
Permethrin Used by itself or with skin applied repellents to build the ultimate protective barrier. Permethrin (pyrethrin) is a contact insecticide. That is, it kills ticks or other insects when it comes in contact with them. It is used on clothing and materials. It uses the same active ingredient used in hair shampoos for head lice. When applied to clothing the Permethrin binds to the fabric eliminating the risk of over-exposure to the skin. Though FDA approved for use on skin, skin contact deactivates Permethrin within fifteen minutes.
(Found Elsewhere)
Made from the crushed and dried flowers of a daisy, pyrethrum is a powerful and fast natural insecticide. The man-made synthetic version of pyrethrum is called pyrethrin, and acts on contact against insect nervous systems. Permethrin has low toxicity in mammals. It is the same active ingredient is used in hair shampoos for head lice, and in anti-scabies cream. When applied to clothing the Permethrin binds to the fabric eliminating the risk of over-exposure to the skin. Though FDA approved for use on skin, skin contact deactivates Permethrin within fifteen minutes.
Permethrin is a contact insecticide. That is, it kills ticks or other insects when it comes in contact with them. It can be used on clothing and materials. As a clothing or sleeping bag application, permethrin is very effective at keeping ticks from attaching to you. Permethrin is effective on tents and tent openings to keep away mosquitoes and ticks and at reducing their population in your camping area. Spray applications of permethrin can remain effective up to 14 days of exposure to light or oxygen, or through five washings. Dip applications can remain effective even longer. Permethrin in conjunction with a Deet based insect repellent forms the most effective barrier possible. Permethrin is also available in concentrates for spraying large areas. As a treatment for clothing, permethrin can be effective for up to two weeks per application. While not harmful to humans or pets, your skin rapidly neutralizes permethrin making skin applications of no value. Permethrin may be used on dogs, or pet bedding to kill ticks or fleas.
Deet & Permethrin
Studies have shown that when an effective Deet repellent is applied to the skin and Permethrin treated clothing is worn, almost 100% protection can be achieved against insect bites.
In one recent study by the U.S. military in Alaska using full body coverage of clothing and mosquito netting in extreme density of mosquitoes, permethrin treated body covering alone kept the mosquitoes away a few inches. With the added spatial repellency of Deet, the pesky critters were kept away up to a foot, allowing the study participants to eat without swallowing insects. Deet and permethrin together offered 99.9% protection against mosquito bites even under these most rigorous conditions. In another study in the late 1980s, 100% protection was achieved against mosquito bites. In all studies, 100% protection has been shown against ticks when Deet and Permethrin are used in combination.
So I guess the stuff I use has 50% Permethrin concentrate. Wont know till I actually get some more and read the label. If it, then I can tell you that deet smells a whole lot better while Permethrin has a chemical odor. From what I get in my reading is this combination of chemicals will provide best insect proof possible....why no one has made this mixture yet is beyond me. R-326, MGK-264, Deet, and Permethrin.
I also found out that Deet molecules are smaller than others, so get absorbs by the skin quickly, and reduces it's effectiveness. MGK-264 has larger molecules which absorb more slowly. So if those two were mixed and used, the MGK-264 would prevent Deet from absorbing so quickly. MGK-264 and R-326 are most costly. So whats best at this time is Permethrin concentrate for house and lawn use(and clothing), while Deet is still best for the skin. None are harmful to people and pets. I think I prefer Permethrin since it actually kills them around the house and lawn, while Deet merely repels them, so live to bother you another day.
Well that was fun, bubye.
akashik 05-13-2001, 07:28 AM Citro and garlic both get my thumbs up.
Different people with different body chemistries have different attractability to mozzies - true story. Thankfully I'm one of the people those little flying Zero's don't like. We have them the size of horse flies here and they carry dieseases! We have Dengi fever as well as a nice one called Ross River fever... Think of the old 'Yuppy Flu' - 6 months or so laid on your back unable to get out of bed...
Of course in a country with 8 of the top 10 deadly snakes in the world the bugs aren't much of a problem *grin*

determinist 05-13-2001, 07:39 AM Mosquito! Remind me of a past incidence, I was all alone (there was usually around 16 platoons of camp mates during weekdays) in my military camp one Sunday, taking a afternoon nap, covering myself head to toe with a blanket.. EXCEPT! one of my arm slip out.. .. the moment i woke up, i don't even feel any itch, my entire arm was numb and swollen.. not a single centimeter goes without a bite or two, hundreds at least.. it was a deep comfortable nap but woke up such horrible experience, suck dry by mosquitossss!
Webdude 05-13-2001, 10:53 PM Citro is ok as far as the fact that DEET was discontinued in the military because a certain percentage of people are allergic to it. Unfortunalty, it takes 1,000 the amount of Citro to equal the protection of DEET. Permethrin is even better....and it seems Malathion is even better. Deet and Citro are ok if you wanna merely repel them, but I want all mosquitoes that enter my property to die immediatly so I dont have to worry about repelling them..LOL
I got the stuff today. It is Malathion 50% by Elimitator. It's 16 oz concentrate and costs about $5. This is the stuff cotton farmers use to fight the boll weavel and fruit flies. Counties use the stuff in neighborhoods to fight mosquitoes by shooting it as a steam mist in the air around the areas. Unfortunatly, they use so little actual ingredient (2%) that it does very little good as steam mist. Putting it in a water hose sprayer works excellent for me........
I did also get some stuff called Spectricide Bug Stop with 2.5% Permethrin (highest percentage I could find) and it doesnt do as good as the Malathion, but costs more...

I love that description, heh. I can see 100's of WHT vistors wandering around Wal-mart looking for a little black bottle containing 50% of 'something', heh heh.
And I resent that last comment!
