I would start off with managed and try to build up your core business first. Later on, think about adding it as an option. You don't want to ruin your reputation as a developer by providing terrible hosting service.
Does managing a server take up a lot of time in the day, or are you able to set it up, and just monitor it, and update paches as and when needed?
would you mind posting what is involved in managing a server please?

Managing a server doesn't fill your day. However, upgrading, patching, etc, can take a few hours sometimes.

managed hosting is ususally done by the provider, they do all the patching, upgrading, etc. you just tell them what you want done and they'll do it for you. of course you pay for it, but that's life. :D
How much do you realy have to know to manage a server securely?

If I want to do coding for sites, and help on a few layouts of sites, and do web hosting, am i better of getting a managed server?, or is it worth actually learning?
and are there courses that teach you how to manage servers ect, or are people willing to tewach, obviously for a price?

get a book on the os you plan to use for the server, an administration one. it'll be learning process but i'd start off with the design part of your business first to play around and get a feel for the os and server. then from there add hosting services and doing that way, also gives you a chance to host the clients that buy templates or designs.
