![]() | View Full Version : How to read Webalizer stats? Dave22 01-20-2003, 11:45 AM http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/david6566/1.gif What's my total hits for Jan 19? Mark_TVI 01-20-2003, 11:50 AM There is generally a summary box at the top with the following information: Monthly Statistics for January 2003 Total Hits Total Files Total Pages Total Visits Total KBytes Total Unique Sites Total Unique URLs Total Unique Referrers Total Unique User Agents From what you posted though you had 108,143 hits on 1-19 . Dave22 01-20-2003, 11:54 AM But that gives me the totals for the hole month right? I just want the total for Jan 19. Dave22 01-20-2003, 11:59 AM 108,143 hits.........I don't know how i could have that many my counter script says way less. Mark_TVI 01-20-2003, 12:04 PM What does your web counter say? Webalizer is just software that reads your raw access logs and as such is generally pretty accurate. RyanK 01-20-2003, 12:44 PM Funny you ask. I found the best way is to get some cheap movie 3d glasses, tape it to a kaleidoscope, point and aim to your monitor and view. You'll still see the same old thing, really nasty looking logs. :stickout: Just playing ... I personally don't like webalizer stats very much but from what I can tell it's 108,143 hits. Your stats may be different than what your web counter says because webalizer will count raw log files and will count hits from invalid URLs (i think) whereas your web counter counts only legit hits, I could be wrong though since I don't use webalizer. Dave22 01-20-2003, 01:47 PM I'm using two scripts to count hits one says 4,320 Uniques for Jan 19 The other says 3,400 for Jan 19 (AXS) and Webalizer says 108,143 for Jan 19 See how far off webalizer is? RyanK 01-20-2003, 01:48 PM Maybe webalizer is tracking total hits but your web counter is tracking total sessions (which is different). Anyone who deals with webalizer ... jump in. Dave22 01-20-2003, 01:50 PM Which script would you belive? I'm only using webalizer because that's what my host has installed. I love AXS i think most people have heard of this script if not it's located here..http://www.xav.com/scripts/axs/ The only thing i don't like about it is the log file gets to big in one day. madmouser 01-20-2003, 02:08 PM Hits isn't the same as visitors. Hits counts what had to be loaded for each page. For example, if the index page had 2 .gifs, 6 buttons and 2 photos and someone visited it, you'd show 11 "hits" but only one visitor. The important stats I look at are number of visitors and number of pages visited. This shows if the site is "sticky" -- visitors are coming to your site, like what they see and look around. In this case, on Jan. 19, you had 2,964 visits with a total of 5,451 page views and they came from 3,643 sites -- which could include using links on your own site to go to another page. If your stats show a lot of people using AOL coming to visit you could have a lot more visitors than shown because AOL will cache a site and deliver that. It may not show in the visitor count. Mark_TVI 01-20-2003, 02:37 PM I agree with madmouser. Your web counter and Webalizer are not counting the same things or are they counting them the same way. It's true Webalizer counts invalid URL's as hits but it also breaks them out so you can see exactly how many times that was a factor. Personally I like Webalizer, it categorizes a lot of very useful information once you learn how to intrepret it. This will help optimize your site and allow you to enhance what's popular and address issues that could keep people from coming back or really exploring your site. |
