Hello
I was just wondering if anybody would know of a particular reason why one's site (previously ranking well at google) would dissappear totally off google? (doesn't even recognize the domain when typed in)
The only thing I can think of is that last month we moved to a new dedicated server and possibly there was just enough down time for the google spiders to come crawling whilst the nameservers changed?????
I haven't got the foggiest why. It's very sad :bawling:
I am just hoping that it picks us up again before too long.
Any other ideas as to why? Or does this happen every now and again and its just tough luck?
Thanx everyone :)

That could be it. Google's update is built from a deep crawl that's done once a month. If a site's down during the crawl it won't be in the next index (although there's some indication lately that they do re-check particular sites a second time after a day or two).
Even if the site wasn't acually down at the time, Google caches IP addresses for some time. If your move was made right before a crawl, they may have looked for you at your old location.
The good news is that in either case you'll probably be back next month -- as long as there are still other sites linking back to yours.
Thanx JayC :)
Fingers crossed then for that.
LOL! says something about my timing though, doesn't it!

What JayC said.
It also helps to have quality, reliable web hosting (everyone, let's sing the cliche now!)
There is one other (albeit a very minute) possibility. Depending on the number of hops Google's bot needs to get to your site and the location of those hops, one of them could have been down. If I'm not mistaken, this does throw the Google bot and leads it to think that your site isn't there when it really is. The site's not down; it's merely unreachable to the Google bot. JayC may be able to verify this.

This happened to me 2 months ago - I was completely removed from google with absolutly no aparent reason. I remember feeling really upset but in about 2 weeks was back in at about the same ranking (if not a bit better ;))
You should be OK :)

JayC may be able to verify this. Sure, a spider is just like any other visitor in that respect: it has to be able to find a way to your server, and then find your server up and available. So any connectivity problem could cause it to be unable to get to you, the server actually being down isn't the only possible cause of the problem -- just as when you are unable to get to a particular site yourself using a web browser.
The fact that the site was just moved to a different IP address makes that a good possibility, but it's certainly possible that there was a different problem that caused the site to be unreachable. In either case, as long as the situation no longer exists you should be back in the next update.
Hello :)
Thanx for the extra info. mlovick and TheGame1264!
I ought not complain about the reliable hosting, as I am the one I would have to query about that factor ;)
As I said, fingers crossed and all will hopefully be back as usual (or better!) before too long.
As I am just starting out in the hosting biz, being available on the search engines is kinda important, I figure
Thanx again, all!

when googlebot indexes your site (its constently crawling your site unless you contact google otherwise) it will remove you from the index (other then your directory listing) and once the crawl is completed, your site will be put back into the index
