If you had your choice, what changes would you make to WHT? What information would you like to see on the main page? What would you NOT like to see there?

Basically, the question is... how can we improve WHT?

Acronym BOY

Rules.

And maybe a few additions, such as three word posts are denied, try to get some content. Maybe also posts with just smilies. And also if you are going to present information, at least be able to back it up.

There are alot of nice hacks...

Also upgrading vB would prolly be a good idea..

As far as the style, I would keep it the same, its simple and easy to read....

I think overall WHT is what I would call the "perfect" forum its fast, easy to use and has all the nice hack add-on's such as quick reply without going crazy with them.. There are alot of vB forums out there which have skins/buttons which make it very hard to use and I think the default setup such as we have now is the most user freindly. just my 2c

For one thing, we don't need a new design or actual appearance. We need to revamp the rules and make a couple minor adjustments to the fourms (descriptions and what not). And this warning/moderation system needs to be used...

Robert,
1) Addition of active moderators. (most important)
2) Like Acronym BOY stated, amendment to the rules, banning single image posts like :)

The style is fine as is.

What is needed is moderation.

I too agree that the forum needs more moderation. I myself find it less and less incline to post because of all the mess.

Ok, here's what I've got installed right now:

WYSIWYG Post Editor

WYSIWYG does not appear to be currently functioning properly, I suspect this has something to do with the javascript it uses, so that portion is still being worked on.

Please let me know ASAP if you experience any problems as a byproduct of one of these hacks.

It needs to be enabled on a 'per-user' basis via Edit Options under the UserCP.

Nope...looks like the vb options weren't set correctly when it was installed....or it could just be buggy

hey i forgot to add this to my list of suggetions....http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=95783 Although Chicken said it didn't work I KNOW IT WORKS because I have it working at programmingtalk

and how about a vb version upgrade? (could be the reason why the above doesn't work)

vito

Could you set verdana or some other sans serif font as default? I don't care much for this one...

Edit: Never mind. It comes out OK in the post. It just looks funny when you're composing the message.

Was set up exactly as the document said, to the word. Still looking into it.

An upgrade will be done but unfortunately cannot just be done on a whim as from what I understand, all php hacks are lost in an upgrade so time would need to be set aside to re-do the hacks after the upgrade and time is very rare. :)

Well..

What you do is use a file comparision tool, like beyond compare, and it takes me less than 20 minutes to do an upgrade...

Prolly should have done an upgrade before applying the new hacks..

Anyway, let me know if you need help...

The time to perform the upgrade is not time consuming, re-applying the hacks is the time-consuming factor. I was asked by headsurfer to apply the hacks immediately, so this was what was done. But we will be fine, but thanks. Please continue supplying suggested input for modifications and we will handle how they are applied, some great suggestions so far. :)

I think many members would appreciate a hack that would allow them, in their Options section, to filter which forums show up in their own New Posts page. On several occasions I have read posts complaining that they always had to wade through posts in which they had no interest. For example, someone may have to interest in anything in the Lounge and in Related Offers. They could simply deselect those forums, and they would not show up in the results.

Also, is there any way to improve the Search functionality? Unless I'm using it wrong, it frustrates me sometimes. Example: doing a search for abc, and abc.com and finally www.abc.com will all yield different results. I would like it if simply searching for abc would provide anything that contains abc.

Use wild cards, just like it says on the search page itself.

Actually I think a cool techy theme would make this forum look MUCH better.

Right now the top of this forum looks QUITE bland.

Something done in dark sharp blues/silvers/grays would look awesome!

Akash
01-24-2003, 02:17 AM
if you can make one that isn't too graphics intensive and loads quick, i'm sure Robert would consider it...

I've got a place to test it if you'd like ;)

I'm not a designer :P

But im sure there are many on this forum whom could help out..

Adding a section that allows customers to rate and leave comments on webhosts instead of having to do it via a thread would be great. Findmyhosting.com is a fine example of that concept!

Yeah, maybe spice up this forum a bit. Don't go off and do a yaxay. They went over board. Just do like Yahoo did when they re-designed their site. Spice it up a bit, round the corners off and stuff...

Dangit... is anyone else having a really hard time submitting a post? It's timing out, and taking forever to do it sometimes.

H2

To allow URLs in signatures (I'm ready to pay for this option)

Akash
01-26-2003, 10:50 AM
 They do allow URLS in signatures...not links but they allow URLS...or is that what you wanted?

H2
01-26-2003, 11:36 AM
yes, LINKS <a href =...

Akash
01-26-2003, 01:43 PM
ah...the reason they do not allow them is because then other html or vb tags would be allowable. stripping the signatures of all this keeps it plain and simple and would prevent large distracting signatures

Really if you think of it, moderators shouldn't be necessary if everyone would follow the rules. The odds of that happenings are slim to none though.

allan
01-27-2003, 09:57 PM
Two things:

1. I agree that more moderators are necessary.
2. We not only need a spell-checker pug-in, but we need to force all members to use it :D.

Akash

I've been seeing more of the moderators (especially Robert :D) online, so I think we should wait a bit and see if adding Matt helped any.

I do not personally think a spell checker is needed.. If people really care about there spelling they will double check it to make sure that it is correct.

If we had a spellcheck option here I would normally use it.. Occasionally I load up my own spellcheck page. I beleive I posted a hack ealier that is in the style of the old www.spellchecker.com (http://www.spellchecker.com)..

Now that the WYSIWYG editor is installed it might require some adaptation to get content from an iframe and reinstert into an iframe but shouldn't be to hard. Also we'd need to add extra words to the pspell module, so hosting terms would be reconized :D

Its not for them, its for me :D. However, I agree it is probably not a good idea -- because it would probably take more computing power than even Robert has to correct all the spelling mistakes on this board :D.

I liked the spell checker when we had it before. It was very handy.

Yaeh, a splel ceckerh would be ncie... ;)

SWR... If we added a grammer checker, I'd be banned for sure! :(

I do not think a "redesign" of the layout is needed, nor would I care to see the site go to dark colors. Dark sites, to me at least, just have such a gothic feel about them (not that gothic is a bad thing... just isnt my bag)

I think the mods do a pretty good job, for the number that are listed.

Probably the biggest thing (I feel) that needs to be done -- like already mentioned -- is making the rules easier to read, more clearly defined, and enforced - not so vaguely. If that entails adding more moderators, so be it... :)

Oh yeah, *cough* chicken *cough* wanted me to suggest that mods be payed more! :D (jk chicken)
