I cant get network solutions to release my domain!! I have tried the online route, faxed a letterhead authorization to them and still no go. Does anyone out there have any helpful pointers on how to get them to release.
Thanks

In the last 2 weeks, I've gotten most of my clients away from NSI and had to deal with the faxing of authorization to change the e-mail address on record.
The trick is that the number that prints on the form that they give you is not the number they use. Try 703 326-7013 instead.
Once you have the secret number, the rest is a matter of time and transferring to a better registrar using the established procedure.

Do you mean releasing you domain name to another Domain Registrar?
Assuming it is, ask you new Domain Registrar to do the transfer, they will process the necessary documentation and send(email) it to the "Adminstrative Contact of that particular domain name" at NSI and NSI(the losing domain registrar) will later also email the Adminstrative Contact of that particular domain name" to confirm the transfer.

Network Solutions will not release the domain if there are any monies owed to them for the domain name. If you initiate a transfer to another domain registrar AFTER the domain has expired, Network Solutions regards that domain name as being renewed for another year; thus, they consider the account in the rears and will not let go of the domain. If this is the case, then you can either pay US$35 to Network Solutions for the registration for that year and then have to pay the new registrar their fees, or you can pay NSI their $35 and stay with Network Solutions for another year. Either way, they'll get their money or they'll deactivate the domain. I guess once the domain name expires, you can theoretically re-register the domain with the Registrar of your choice, but I wouldn't want to take a risk like that with my domain name.
What's the lesson in all this? Make sure to initiate a transfer to another Domain Registrar BEFORE the domain expires.
Hope this helped :)

I used to have to resort to faking email headers to release names fron NSI (I no longer had the email account I registered my domain names with, because I had switched to a different ISP). Worked like a charm though. So much for their security. :D
