View Full Version : Why we don't host them

I have friends that have hosted several sites. Our reason for not hosting them is based upon seeing 4 things happen.

1. Sooner or later they almost all spam.
2. The are often under attack. There are "groups" that have nothing to do but to try and shut down servers that have adult content.
4. Sooner or later you get emails about copyrights of image or content. You as an ISP or host get caught in the middle of it. It becomes your headache.
4. Bandwidth, bandwidth, bandwidth. I know of one site hosted by my friend that got posted on several differnet adult portals on the same day that went through 170GB of bandwidth in 9 hours before he shut it down. You just can't control the burstable load potential.

Personally, to each his/her own, but as a busness it is just not worth the headaches.

We specialize in the hosting of adult sites, and I would have to disagree with you on the fact that they are hard to handle. Most adult sites are rather small and you generally only wind up with problems on them if they are highly trafficked TGP sites, and or high traffic pay sites.

As for them spamming we have strict rules in our AUP against that, and will terminate a site that is guilty of it without prejudice.

As for the copyright thing, that is something that with any site you could have to deal with, but we have had no problems with violated copyrights on any of the sites that we host. We do check the sites to make sure that they are not in violation of any of our rules and our customers know this, and so far they have been abiding by the rules.

The bandwidth thing is another imaginary thing, unless you are hosting a large mainstream pay site or a large TGP, the bandwidth usage of the average adult site are extremely small. With some of them it is nearly non-existant.

If you don't want to host adult sites because you're against the content is one thing but to not do it because it's too much "trouble" is beyond me. You're leaving a huge niche behind which I'm sure David is happy about since it means less competition! :D

I'm curious if you did research about hosting adult site that led you the conclusion that it's too much trouble or is it based on rumor? I'm just curious about that. Most adult sites are tiny and the webmasters are good people working hard. I hear about more "trouble" from shady web hosting companies then legit adult sites offering a popular service!
