View Full Version : my version 12 experience so far
allending 05-07-2001, 11:49 PM Thanks to everyone who reccomended version 12.
Ive had my dedicated server for about 2 weeks now, and its been great :D
I was a total newbie to dns, apache, and whatnot, and uuallan helped me out with every single question i had - i must have sent him about 20 emails with questions by now and he's been answering them like a clock!
The speed is pretty damn good, there was a downtime of 2 hours a few days ago, but that was the data center , so i guess overall its been great :)
Today, he fixed the last of my problmes with mail and ftp ... heh . i would never have known how to fix it by myself.
I expressly reccomend anyone who is looking for a dedicated server to consider v12 . though they dont have any at the moment , but i hear that there will be new servers in about a week or two .......
heh, i just hope there arent too many people who sign up , or else the support will have more customers
:smash:
(SH)Saeed 05-08-2001, 01:52 AM I have been considering them for a while, but we'll see how things turn out. uuallan has not answered an email I sent him, I also PM'd him here. :(
allending 05-08-2001, 02:00 AM Hehe, i wish you good luck :)
Im sure youll find allan really helpful if you decide to go with v12
(SH)Saeed 05-08-2001, 02:03 AM By the way, what server did you get and how is the server speed (cpu, harddrives, etc) and how is the connection speed?
allending 05-08-2001, 02:13 AM Hi zolbian,
I got a p3 700 , 256mb RAM, 20 Gig hard drive.
The servers are all from penguin computing, which is a great company for most servers..... relion 120 ... drool ... ;)
The connection speed is great - about 800KB getting the uunet file with 1 connection, and with 2 connections it nearly doubled to 1.5 - i didnt want to try 3 ... hehe .. thats my bandwith im using!! but i guess it is pretty good...
What else, hmm. the support is really good. allans wife helps out a lot too . i cant believe how good it is actually (ive used about 10 webhosts (lwb.com,phpwh.com , etc etc ect - god im unlucky! ) before and this is by far the best :)
Just send allan lots of emails with compliments and hell help you out good :D

c0bra 05-08-2001, 09:31 AM Our experience with version12 has been far from satisfactory so far. Our box went online about a week ago.
After waiting most of last Wednesday for the box to go online as promised we finally got an Email at 05:43 GMT Thursday morning saying it was now online. However they noted there had been a problem with the Ensim control panel installation and we couldn't use that yet.
Also the password they supplied was wrong. Fair enough they did send out the correct one some six hours later but it was another inconvience for us to deal with.
Thursday morning > Ensim control panel still not working at all. Version 12 say they are still working on the problem. We still cannot create any sites.
Thursday evening > We finally get an email saying the Ensim panel is now working. I call our web development engineer up and we agree a time for him to start work on the project we rented the server for.
Friday morning > Our developer arrives. Together we sit down and create the sites needed for our project. But something still seems to be wrong. The panel is creating ALL sites in the web server root. We grin and bare it. We can get by with one site for now for this project and setup our scripts in the web server root. But this doesn't work either. We get a whole bunch of server errors and permission denieds. We finally come to the conclusion the installation is totally screwed.
Friday afternoon > We get an email back from Allan about the problem. He cannot understand why I'm so upset with the inconvience these problems are causing me. He asks me to run by the steps we're going through to create these sites. A few hours later he gets back to me and agrees we are doing everything right and opens another ticket with Ensim.
Saturday > We hear nothing at all from version12.
Sunday > Finally we hear something back Allan is "still waiting to hear from Ensim" about the problem.
Monday > Ensim say they are unable to duplicate the problems we have been experiencing on the server. Not suprising this application seems to be working fine for everyone else and Allan says all other version12 clients have had no problems. Which leads me to believe this problem lies with the software installation by version12.
Version12 have already admitted there was a problem with the original installation. And that:
"When we determined the problem with the installation, we blew away the old install and re-installed from scratch, so this would not have been affected by the initial installation problems."
Meanwhile it's Tuesday and we still haven't been able to create any sites due to a problem with the Ensim control panel they installed... we're now setting up our software on another server with a more capable company and I guess we'll just have to write the $220 we've wasted on version12 as a total loss.
If you're considering version12 I have one simple piece of advice for you... wait for version13.
(SH)Saeed 05-08-2001, 10:14 AM Wow, that's not the best start you could get with a hosting company. Don't they have 30 days money back guarantee? Even if they don't, it would be nothing but right to give you back your money since you payed them for a service they could not provide. I have been waiting days now for uuallan to reply to my email. I don't think he will though.
Anyways, I wish you the best with the new company.
c0bra 05-08-2001, 10:48 AM Of course you're right and we have indeed asked for a refund based on exactly what you said. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. I'll be sure to let you know if we part amicably from version12 or not. :D
allending 05-08-2001, 11:42 AM Sorry about your problems coBra ;)
I didnt face any of the problems you have faced. Heh, my sites have been running fine - mail me to see some stats if you need it.
Ensim works great for me, though it doesnt have as may features as WHM, but its great for what Im paying.
.... which isnt very much :D
I dont think it was fair for you to say you hope that you part amicably from v12, but yet say that you have already written the 220 dollars off as a total loss and warn people to wait for version13. It would have been good to at least wait to see if you get a refund before saying it was a total loss.
c0bra 05-08-2001, 12:56 PM I tested the Ensim panel before we signed up with Version12 and it seems to do the job fine. As you say not as fully featured as Cpanel+WHM but it does the job at a decent price.
If version12 offer us a refund then I'll certainly make that clear in this thread. While we have had a lot of problems this past week with them, I'm certainly not disputing that others might have had different experiences.
Allan has been good for the most part in answering most of my emails in a concise and prompt manner. But that still doesn't alter the fact we haven't been provided with the service we ordered and for that much I feel its only fair to share my experiences with others here. I'd certainly want the postive and negative if I were looking for comments prior to signing up with version12. Isn't that what this board is about?
(SH)Saeed 05-08-2001, 01:19 PM c0bra, you are very right. Although from what I have read about them before they seem like a pretty good company. We all know that nothing and nobody is perfect and that we all make misstakes. Maybe you just had bad luck with the server/installation. When I first signed up with WeinBar, the first week was very problem rich. But they got everything fixed and now I'm a very happy customer with a fast server at a good price ;) Although I need to move to a dedicated for the project I'm working on.
allending 05-08-2001, 01:54 PM
heh, zolbian, maybe you should stalk the advertising forums - i bet theres going to be a good offer for dedicated servers from one company or another soon :D
c0bra 05-08-2001, 06:04 PM Well I can now add version12 have indeed promised me a full refund. I indeed agree nobody is perfect and mistakes do happen. I'll highlight again the fact despite all the problems we had with our particular server we can't complain with the responsiveness and knowledge we received in our communications with Allan.
I'm pleased I wont be moving onto another company with any ill-feeling towards either version12 or Allan. And I genuinelly hope I read more comments like those of "Allending" about the company in the future.
PaulRoberts 05-08-2001, 06:33 PM Hey all,
I've been a browser of this message board for some time, and finally someone made me cringe. I host my site with Version12 (Cheater.com) and it is very database intensive. I do not use any "web admin" programs - give me root and a prompt and lets roll! I have not had ANY problems with them.
I personally think that if you are to venture into the "co-dedicated" market you better know what you are doing. If you can't install some software yourself you shouldn't be using it.
If you want the "ultimate" service and "reliability" the best way to achieve it is to do it yourself! Version12 provides a fast connection to the 'Net and that's all I ask (great support is there if you need it). Version12 is a great hosting company and I hope people continue using them.
Regards,
Paul Roberts

That's good to know and clearly you're not the only one...

As far as I know Ensim is not geared towards server administration. It's there to make the process of managing sites and email easy. It's nice you only have one site to manage and therefore probably have less call for a software to speed up those tasks. Some of us need more than one site on our dedicated server and the "web admin" software cuts down on the time and costs needed to maintain those sites.
I'm more than capable of installing software and patches and maintaining the server through a standard shell prompt. I've been doing it for two years. However the Ensim installation was so messed up it was just not possible or feesable to do such in this case.

All I wanted was a server that was setup and delivered to me as promised. I agree the version12 service seems fast enough itself and that the guy running the show Allan seems generally a good guy. I wouldn't have gone with them in the first place if it wasn't for this site and the comments I'd read.
As for this your subject "quit crying". If people didn't share their experiences with companies then nobody would have any clue who was good and who was bad. If you want sugar coated viewpoints of companies then you should spend your time surfing the so-called host review sites with their paidfor reviews and recommendations.

Hi,
I thought they offered a 'virtual' dedicated 256k connection. Is it able to burst to 800KB?
allending 05-09-2001, 02:25 PM Hi eric,
Yes v12 offers a 256k dedicated connection. But when i signed up for their special 2 weeks ago, i could pick either a 384K dedicated connection (about 150g) or 115Gigabytes of transfer burstable.
