Hi,

I have somewhat a dilema of sorts and can't figure out an answer. Right now i have 2 hosts. I just bought the second. What i want to do is use the second to just host a subdomain of my site so i can take the load off my first host. My site is www.dodstudios.net. On the new host i created a domain dodstudios.net, i didn't make it files.dodstudios.net because when i tried that in Cpanel it was showing it as www.files.dodstudios.net which is not needed. So with dodstudios.net setup in Cpanel i created the subdomain files.dodstudios.net

Back in WHM this is what the dns zone entry looks like for it right now.
http://www.dodstudios.net/images/dns2.jpg

The nameservers are pointing to my original host, and the 216.127.78.51 is the ip of my original host.

Is there anything else i need to have or have done wrong, because i really need to get this to work. Or should i have infact made the domain files.dodstudios.net and just did something wrong? I am sorry but, i'm really new to Cpanel/WHM which is why i ask...i'm used to Plesk

I appreciate any help

The A Record's IP needs to be the IP of the host you added the subdomain "files.domain.com". You have it pointing to your main sites IP.

wow that was fast lol

ok lemme just get this straight should i add my new host's IP to all of the A Records? dodstudios.net, ftp, and files?

Also i know this is really dumb but to login into the ftp of the subdomain do you use ftp.files.dodstudios.net or ftp.dodstudios.net? I ask because when you add a subdomain there isn't a seperate account created in Cpanel.

Again thanks for the help

You have two host. Which one resolves the main domain? That host DNS record needs to have that A Record pointing to your second host IP for the A record "files". The other DNS entries located at host2 are irrelevant since they are not resolving.

ftp to files.dodstudios.net.

files.dodstudios.net and www.dodstudios.net are basically both subs. So don't let what's in front throw you off.

ok so i added an A record to my original host (the one that resolves the domain) with the IP pointing to 207.44.162.99 which is my new hosts IP

Is there anything further i need to put in the new hosts dns fields?

I ask because ftp.files.dodstudios.net is still not resolving

hmm this is odd

http://files.dodstudios.net now works there is a little index.html...yet i can't login to the ftp through ftp.files.dodstudios.net

Well, it worked. I reslve 207.44.162.99 now and see the placeholder. As far as ftp, just use the IP.

your right! Ok but 1 last question

which folder do i add files to? I ask because since my original host is pointing to 207.44.162.99 then how does it know to also look at the files subdomain created in the 2nd host?

here's what i don't get

when you type in files.dodstudios.net through the dns A Record on the original host, this url gets forwarded to 207.44.162.99 the new host. Once there how does it know to use the subdomain setup or even the account used on the new host?
