View Full Version : Do people still make speculative domain purchases?

I seem to remember that once upon a time with the right speculative domain purchases a person could make a whole load of money in the future.
The domain name purchased for next to nothing was probably worth next to nothing right then.
However future events happen, new companies start-up and suddenly the original owner gets an offer they cannot refuse.

I suppose the bubble has now burst and with all the "best names" now gone you've really got no hope.
Do people still make speculative purchases now a days in the hope they might make a profit on a domain name?
Or is it just simply not worth it, new companies will simply register something else and you'll not even see your registration money refunded?

I'm just interested really.
I've occasionally come accross a domain name that is available and actually has the look & feel of being useful to somebody sometime but I very rarely get the credit card out and actually register it - maybe I'm missing out?

Well there are some people living in fantasy land - just check ebay - some of the "names"? being offered at $20-50,000 and more is really a joke (there are 5 at $10,000,000.01 at the moment).
However check out www.trade.com currently getting over $20,000 or www.ahl.com at about $6000 last time I looked - even www.i66.com is nearly at $1000 at the moment.
So the right name can make it but some of the others just raise a laugh.

I still like to speculate and buy domain names I think are of value. I don’t have illusions of grandeur though. I’m not thinking I’ll sell this for 7 million bucks or whatever. If I buy a domain for $7.95 or $8.95 and sell it for $20-50 that’s a pretty good ROI. Since I like to domain speculate anyway as a hobby anyway why not try to make a few bucks. I don’t have thousands of domains we’re talking 20 or so. I don’t believe I’ll strike it rich but I have fun with it and I’m making some extra cash for fun.

hehe :)
I had a spare hour at work today so whilst pretending to make some changes to our network I was just doing some general web browsing - I like to just put a site name into say IE and see if a site opens up (yes I know this is not a sure-fire way of discovering if a domain is actually registered or not).

Anyway I then had the need to get a map of the area where our new offices are going to be.
As I'm in the UK I thought OK, let us try an obvious named site.
I just typed in www.findamap.co.uk
Came back with an IE search window saying the site couldn't be opened.
Just decided to check on the registration of the domain out of interest and was all rather surprised to find it hadn't been registered.

I suppose if people had enough time there are domain names out there to be had that have simply been overlooked/forgotten or people haven't realised that maybe there is a value behind the name.

I hope you're in Cambridge and that you picked it up because someone in Cambridge already registred findamap.co.uk today! Hope it was you!

I don't know much about international domains I only have.com's but that appears to be a great domain! Good luck with it!
