Hi

I am thinking about getting a cobalt server (also please post your recommendation for a host). I have used a FreeBSD box for 2 years now and know nothing about cobalt boxes. Are there any limitations? I heard that they suck for database driven or dynamic sites.

thanks

A raq3 cobalt server is not really powerful, it is a 300Mhz machine so you can't expect it to handle big traffic sites or one that uses mysql/php/postresql a lot. If you have only static sites, you are hosting only your site or a lot of small sites you should have no problem.

If you've been using FreeBSD for two years, why are you even considering getting a raq? Cobalt raqs are essentially $500 of hardware plus a $3500 web interface... and if you've been using FreeBSD for two years, I really can't see why you'd need or even want that interface.

To answer about the raq's limitations, they have slow processors and disks, so don't try running any sort of dynamic stuff off of them; for serving static content, I've seen them die (ie, crash and need to be power cycled) around 1.5Mbps.

I wanted a cobalt only because of the control panel that it offers. My freeBSD box did not have that type of interface and I really need it because I host about 40 people. Please offer any input you might have I need to move soon.

Well, have you already established that CPanel doesn't meet your needs? The Cobalt has a nice control panel, but it is hardly unique in that regard.

What is this cpanel that I keep hearing about?

Could you post the url? What type of machines does it run on?

thanks
Alex

CPanel runs on RedHat 6.2 only. It's licensed on a per month basis....

The RaQ4 has a 450mhz processor, again not well suited for highly CGI driven or dynamic sites. The control panel does simply things and does speed up some tasks, but leaves a lot to be desired. CPanel is a more complete solution (one of the only out there) but has some bugs and is currently having upper managment reorganization..
