Hi,

I'm looking into co-locating a few servers for myself and some friends (non-commercial web hosting) and I'm hunting for a switch for us. MRTG's for each port are crucial to detect who caused the overages and such.

We get one 100mb FastE drop into the cabinet. Then I will feed off the connection to the servers. I really don't need anything more than 12-24 ports.

I was looking at a Cisco 1900 series, as they are priced well. They do not have this capability from what I understand and have read though. I don't have any experience with them. My last job I worked alot with Cisco 3548's and I know they do that. I would hope I don't have to scale all the way up to that though to do what I want. It looks like the 2950 would suit my needs also.

Just curious what you people use and your input.

I apperciate it and thanks for your time!

As long as you have a managed switch, you can get MRTG stats from it.. Some old baynetwork switches from Ebay will be perfect for this. Probably will cost you no more than a hundred bucks

Baynetworks/Nortel 350-12T
SMC also has some nice ones..

We picked up a 2924XL-EN from Ebay for $400 and it allows you to manage on a per port basis. I'm pretty sure some cheaper switches will also allow you to do this, but if you are looking to go the cisco route I'd opt for the 2900 series over the 2950 series if you want to save some money. The 2900 series was replaced by the 2950 series, but they are still good switches.

I've never had any problems with cisco switches, definantly go for a 2950. You can get a 2950 24 port for £400, if you buy a few ask for a really good price (maybe someone here wants a switch too?) Ask around, Insight.com have done some good deals on switches in the past.
