While checking some clients sites today, I found the .com was pointing to a realty website (coming soon) and the .net was correct. Now being a concientious host, I called and asked if they had let the domain expire. They thought I was nuts! They registered it last year for 10 years for $170.00 at Verisign. I did a whois at 6 different registrars and they all show no information as to current registrant and that it is available, but say the domain is taken if I try to register it. Verisign strikes again!
I asked them to forward copies of their receipts from the registration to me and they are going to do that. They had been wondering why sales have dropped off, and just attributed it to the holidays. (they have the .net bookmarked)
Don't you just love it?

Is it actually possible to just hijack any domain?? This really sounds crazy! I prefer having spam in my life than something like this to happen.

Best,

Not sure how it happenned, if the old host is involved (he originally registered it for them I'm told) What's more interesting is the lack of whois info... this is a verisign registered site...

maybe the old host decided to make some quick cash and rip them off - did they part of bad terms ?

I think VeriSign is to blame. They might have ripped them off. I'm actually 85% sure. How? I've heard some stories before - all related to VeriSign.

Ok.... they just forwarded the check and renewal form to me... it wasn't registered thru Verisign, it was registered thru Interland by the old webhost. They paid 150.00 for another 9 years last May. I went to Interland to access the domain and sure enough, the domain was transferred by the old host as it's his email address that is used for verification....I am sure this will be straightened out, one way or another.
Matt, yes they parted on bad terms. After paying this guy for site developement and waiting over 6 months without a site, they asked for their money back as nothing had been done. The "gentleman" responded by saying he no longer did developement and had closed his business, and they were out of luck. A phone call to him is about to be placed, and pending the outcome of that, we will determine what steps we will take next. He lives only a few hours away, and as it is the weekend maybe I will stop over and talk to him. Sometimes people are more reasonable and understanding when you talk to them face to face.

It sure is nice when you have a registrar that can help you. One phone call, 2 faxes, and the domain is back where it belongs. Maybe it will be a good weekend after all......This is the fastest resolution to a registrar problem I have ever had.
