Anyone have some tips for getting traffic to a new web site other than submitting to search engines.

Join a banner exchange program related to your website.

Specific tips will vary with the nature of the site. I have a site that grew to be one of the most popular on its topic simply from word of mouth (or fingers). It eclipses many of the commercial sites from fairly big companies.

Generaly speaking, content is important, as is ease of navigation. Links from related sites can help, especially form popular ones. Other common guidelines for creating sites apply. Aside from that, specifics on the site in question are necessary to be of greater assistance.

Try bcentral.com. They have a free service, but thier $19.95/month for 5000 impressions isn't a bad deal either!

I believe bcentral.com is the old linkexchange.com.

Good luck!

I personally think banner exchange networks don't work --

My tips are:

1/ If you can, get a newsletter going....pain in the neck sometimes, but they do make a difference. Heck, look at http://www.lockergnome.com !

2/ Link exchange with sites (not the banner exchanges as in Bcentral / LinkXchange) that are similar to yours... Then you can add a links page full of lovely buttons! Create a page of "linkback" buttons so people are encouraged to link to your site.

3/ Get your site juiced up for the search engines.... and don't forget to get those meta tags sorted - check out http://www.jimtools.com

Plenty more ways out there, but these are nice to start with :)

Cheers!

I agree with Timbo, joining a banner exchange won't work and you will have to put up with ugly banners designed by incompetent webmasters. Starting a banner exchange would work well, especially as you sell banner design services. You could offer your services to every one who signs up.

You will need a good web host for this kind of thing, though. Wonder where you could find one ?
