I would rather not be hosted by a reseller. How do I know who is a reseller before I sign up?

goto domainwhitepages.com then enter the website..
Info given will point out the shared server name like name.domain.com

Do a search on domain.com and you will be able to know who owns it (parent reseller company, if any)

Also a trace might help also..

Ask them straight out before you sign up , But most webhosts start off as a reseller i wouldn`t let them being a reseller be the deciding factor when you choose a new host

I agree!

Resellers many times have another layer of support, that being the folks they bought their account from. They can also be much more attentive to your needs as they are just starting out and want to make a good impression.

There are many factors involved in picking a good host, being a reseller shouldnt be a negative....

My 3 domains are being hosted by resellers. I know that. :)

They are cheaper than the parent hosts.

The good thing in my case is that they are more responsive than the parent hosts.

Greetings:

Pick up the telephone, call them on the telephone, and ask the questions that matter the most to you.

Thank you.

Domain whitepages won't always tell you that the person is infact reselling.

hahaha/ name.domain.com?

Ok. We own 4 colo-servers + own switch and they are at Venturesonline datacenter. Names of our sarvers - name1.vosn.net, name2.vosn.net etc.

Are we resellers? :D

I know some places don't allow own complete server name and gives only name.theirdomain.com (like name#.vosn.net deal).. but do a whois on vosn.net, nothing reffers back to VO unless you know VO. (that was done on purpose, right?) :)

whats wrong with a reseller , i find most of the resellers are more committed then the biggers guys , because

a:they want your business
b:they want to keep your business
c:they want to be one of those big guys , who isnt a reseller

i see nothing wrong with a reseller , as long as the box is up and secure , and you're getting good support , does it really matter ?

Who cares if you're hosted by a reseller? What difference does it make?

I don't think it matters... resellers IMO are typically more appreciative of you. The non-resellers typically will get up to where they make enough off of hosting their priorities shift twoards their reseller/server clients not virtual hosting ones (if that's what you mean)

I don't think it should matter one bit if they're a reseller .... unless they're re-selling dedicated servers, you're probably going to get a better price, and better support, though that's not always the case.

Just ask would be the best way. We used to be resellers and then moved on from that and I personally didnt mind anybody asking. If the reseller is reselling a good service then you are safe (If your reseller is good at providing support).

The way I find out info is by doing a whois on their domain and also going to www.netcraft.com/whats and that will show you where there IP's are allocated to and it can be useful for that.

But... being hosted by a reseller isnt that bad. I tend to find that it is sometimes better as they are smaller companys and care about their customers more.

I'd say a reseller (of whatever industry) is good when they could provide end-users with value-added services. For hosting, many resellers are actually offering web design, programming or localized support.

It doesn't apply to domain name registration though, when many of their so-called free add-on's (e.g. URL or e-mail forwarding) are already provided by my host at no extra cost.

Also im not sure if this is a sure shot way, but most resellers dont offer reseller accounts...

Of course im not 100% sure of that...

Most hosts are resellers! Even many large hosts just colo in a datacenter so that could be considered 'reselling' as well.

What you actually need to be careful of is the resellers of resellers. The can really make for some poor support. For example:

datacenter > provider > reseller 1 > reseller 2 > user

If you have a problem it then has to travel up this chain until someone figures out how to fix it (often that is the 'provider'). These you should avoid like the plague.

resellers are the best cos they want to make good reputation in the hosting market as they probably just started the business and want to be big like www.*******.com
i personally prefer resellers more then others...who is having 5000 clients and cant handle them properly..
Thanks
