View Full Version : Livedrive woes.

Not sure if this is the correct forum, as it's for a backup service, rather than webhosting.

I've been a customer of Livedrive now for just over a year, it's always been a rather, shall we say, irregular service, but in the last 6 months the service has really gone down hill.

I and others noticed around November/December 2010, that the upload speed to their servers, both via FTP and their "livedrive" software, was getting slower as the days went by.

There are posts on their forums, which the staff seem to dismiss and ignore when more reply to confirm the issues.

I've sent three emails since December 2010 and have had nothing but automatic replies.

The main issue, well, the only issue for me, is the upload speeds

According to their staff, capacity isn't an issue

"Your comment is incorrect. We are currently utilising around 55% of our inbound bandwidth capacity.

There are many factors that can contribute to slow upload speeds but over capacity is not the reason in this instance."

My home connection is a 50mb down, 5mb up cable broadband service provided by Virgin Media.

My server is based in Manchester (burstnet EU) and has a 1GBPS port.

I've had two friends with similiar connections to mine test my account as well, all four connections can only manage 30-50kb/sec via FTP and at most, 100kb/sec via their own livedrive software.

You can see in the screenshots below, the speed differences between my home pc to Livedrive and to my server in manchester (Burstnet)

And yet, if you read their official blog, everything looks rosey, as if there's no problems or known issues.

They've just moved into their new offices/data centre on Feburary 15th, yet they still don't seem to be able to fix their FTP or software issues, let alone their apparent connection problems.

But what can ya do? Emails go unanswered, there's no other way to contact them.

All posts/threads on the forum are moderated, so don't appear for days and they seem to ignore those anyways.

You are correct. We have terrible experience of uploading files from our dedicated server using 100MBPs connection at Softlayer WDC datacenter. Files are crashing in middle while uploading. Sent so many emails to support but never receive any reply.

I can see in your second pic your getting the 5mb upload.

"My server is based in Manchester (burstnet EU) and has a 1GBPS port"

Burst Use cogent from what i am aware in the UK and livedrive use C4L so its likely your traffic will goto amsterdam first.

Yes, the second picture is to my server in Manchester, not to the livedrive service.

I finally got a reply after 2 months today, to say

I've just spoken to our operations team lead about your query and we're
not seeing any issues at our end and there's nothing changed within our
infrastructure. We regularly run speed tests around the world to make
sure that our network is performing correctly - I've asked our team to
pay special attention to your region when we next run the tests there.

You might also like to try carrying out your upload through the desktop
software to see if there are any performance improvements there. The
desktop software is quite advanced in the way that it transfers data so
is not so badly affected by network disruption and distance. You might
find that your upload happens more quickly from there.

Ah well.

We have several providers in the UK/EU, not just Cogent.

You're misreading the OP's screen-caps. FYI BurstNET have their own LAN to London and could pick up C4L at LINX, LONAP, or pretty much anywhere around Telecity etc. That's not the problem, as shown by the second cap from the OP on VirginMedia (who also have connects at LINX) getting a good connection up BurstNET's LAN to Manchester.

Burst's Cogent link is part of their peering to NYIIX - In fact it dives under the Atlantic near your home town in Liverpool to get there :)

Seems to me that Livedrive's connect in London is choked.

Yea, it seems that way

The upload rate varies day per day, but I get the same upload speeds from 3 locations, so it must be their server or connection, surely.

Uploading my database backups, one to france, the other to livedrive, from my manchester server.

To France: backups/sql/eog_backup_2011-03-07-21.tar: 6.28 MB 8.92 MB/s

To Livedrive:backups/sql/eog_backup_2011-03-07-21.tar: ETA: 0:18 3.59/ 6.28 MB 156.02 kB/s

Yet, they claim there's nothing wrong with their capacity or servers.

Ah well.

Since my Windows system died last week, I was able to see Livedrive's restore process in action. Hundreds of file restores were "failed" due to a "connection error". I tried manually downloading a few of those files from the web interface. Sometimes they'd download. Other times I received a connection or "maintenance" error on the website, but after trying a few more times, was able to download the file in about 80% of the cases.

I just hope I can get at least most of my files from them before my service expires in 5 days, because there's no way I'm giving them any more of my money.

It's weird how they would say that they couldn't see the problem on their end. I think that they are just washing their hands on those issues you've experience!

They are actually working on there storage servers atm. So its possible certain files may not be accessible

Hello,

I was having a speed issue uploading to Livedrive and came across this web forum while searching for a solution. I thought i would share my solution in case it affects anyone else.

What I found was that when I started uTorrent my Livedrive transfer speed dropped to 1/10 of my previous transfer rate. It did not increase until after I rebooted the computer. I might reboot my computer monthly (or now, after i start uTorrent for something).

I currently have Win7 Pro, The latest uTorrent and Livedrive. I'm on the Rogers network in Canada. My transfer speeds are 90 - 130KB/s upload before starting uTorrent or 8-12KB/s after starting uTorrent. Once I reboot the computer my speeds return to the higher range and are consistently there until i start uTorrent again.

I have not checked uTorrent on another computer to determine if it is a Rogers traffic shaping issue rather than something specific to the computer I normally use. I also haven't tried another BitTorrent client. I usually only use uTorrent to download Ubuntu or Libre/Open Office so it's not too much of an inconvenience to me.

I'm not sure if that helps anyone, but it helped (almost)solve my Livedrive upload speed issue.

Part of the problem is there FTP/SFTP/WEBDAV all use cogent and pure cogent so its cheap as chips for them. Am not sure if they use the same for the file uploader (Livedrive desktop client)
