View Full Version : Costs of starting a datacenter
dbbrock1 01-08-2003, 05:14 PM Anyone here have any idea how much it would cost to create a decent size datacenter about 10,000 sq ft? I'm guessing 3 million for the building, cooling, and backup power. I believe oc3s are $50,000-$75,000/month if im correct.
Thanks,
-Dan
JeremyV 01-08-2003, 05:17 PM location will play a huge factor in overall cost as well. If you need to find real estate and build a new building, prime land could cost much more than the building itself.
dynamicnet 01-08-2003, 05:24 PM Greetings:
I'm not sure about today's investment requirements, but one of the founders of Verio disclosed their Sterling, VA facility cost $600 per square foot to build, and $300 per square foot to operate.
Thank you.
JBIZ718 01-08-2003, 06:26 PM I say a simply phone call to a existing datacenter and well finding out how much space you need.
Overall rather cheap then
Joe

Not counting the local loop, you can quite a bit less for OC3. Probably around $30K/month for OC3 (no local loop).
timelord 01-08-2003, 07:59 PM I few years ago I had a proposal developed and it showed that it would cost me $1.2 Million to build a 5000 sq. foot datacenter (and 3000 sq feet of support space - offices, conference rooms, etc.) in an EXISTING building.
This was for a corporate datacenter, not an Internet datacenter, so things like Internet connections, extra security systems that an Internet datacenter requires, cages, etc are not included.
Hope that helps.

Quadruple that if its in lower Manhatten.
neonlexx 01-08-2003, 09:08 PM Ya I live in the Washington DC area and I know a few good places that NEED datacenters around here but the costs to build them would be through the roof and then trying to dig up places to put fiber lines...
maybe when i win the lotto i'd do it and then make myself a little room inside the DC and live within it......
If you look at Alexandria,Va (right outside of DC for those that dont live here) Datacenters...$200/month for 1u of space and less then 50gigs of B/W and they run on T1 connections!
just my 2 cents......
AH-Tina 01-08-2003, 10:52 PM Rent, rather than buy...then buy something bigger, when you need more space. No sense in building/buying a huge building when you're first starting out.
We are renting the office we're in...and it should give us at least 3 years of room to grow. ALOT cheaper than buying/building.
DigitalIsles 01-08-2003, 11:23 PM OC-3s down here (South Florida) run around 28K including the loop, add a couple K for taxes and tarrifs and you are at 30K. And that price is for Sprint and Genuity.

PebbyCat 01-10-2003, 01:16 PM how about in the UK, where would i be able to get a fast connection to host one server with around 300-1000gb of bandiwdth, hosted in my own house.

Is your house properly zoned for something like this? I doubt it is, but lets assume it is....
Can you get that kind of power in there as well as cooling? You still need to install the fire system as well as a security system. You will need to keep your friends out and your techs in. You will need to sneak it past your insurance company too.
Doesn't sound much like a house to me.
PebbyCat 01-10-2003, 05:54 PM i mislead you, i am just on about just one server, i thought it would of been easer asking here than starting a new thread, so what would be the cost to get a fast connection to you, bear in mind i cant get cable, adsl or any fast connection.
