Hi,

I would like to know if anyone knows of any hosting service that gives you the possibility to connect to a TV Card (e.g. Osprey) and a connection to some kind of Set top box (satellite, cables).

Assuming the use is perfectly legal, is there a service of that sort?

Thanks.

Many colocation datacenters can provide a cross connect to a local CATV provider (or even roof access for DirecTV, ect). Generally this would be something available to colocation customers, not so much dedicated servers. Reason being, you would have to pay for the space and power the set top box takes up, deliver your own custom server hardware, ect.

Interesting idea.
If the satellite and cables are not accessable in your area, and you would like to watch the TV channels this way, then you might find it a lot cheaper to ask someone who is willing to install a dish and STB for you (Satellite installers for example) and setup a good upload internet connection for you with a Slingbox.
No need for a server.
Can you please give more details about what you would like to achieve?

Once they find out the cost they wont like it.
Most data centers charge $200 - $500 per month for roof rights for the satellite dish.
Most data centers charge $100 - $300 per month for cross-connects, to the CATV provider.
Most CATV providers charge business rates, rather then residential rates, for monthly plans.
Either way - dish or CATV, it usually takes a separate receiver, and a kvm or usb to remotely change the channels. So you are looking at 2-4U of colo, depending on the size of the receiver.
Which is why Roku and other Set top boxes with programming on them are becoming so popular.

I think TV services and hosting are totally unrelated services.

How do you expect the hosting with TV services to be related? One services is publishing your content to the internet. One services is TV services where you sit and watch from TV.

If you are referring to Streaming on Demand services, then it could be possibly related but webhosting instead of streamhosting.

Hello kalisky,

We don't advertise this information on our web site however, we actually specialize in Live Stream Hosting but deal with companies locally since their target audience is their local communities/niche. I would be more than happy to provide you with basic details on the requirements and if you already know this information then discard my post :).

First off, FastServ is correct, this would require a custom collocation solution. Not only that, but since the tenant is technically leasing space for where your equipment/servers will be located they would need to obtain approval by property management for adding any equipment on the roof top. At least that’s how it is at 151 front street in Toronto. Techee pricing is about in range with what most data center’s charge but I’ve seen cases where they will also refuse the deployment of equipment on roof tops for whatever reason. Also, depending on the channels you want to offer there is a great possibility that the signal for those channels will not be accessible due to long attitude and latitude for receiving the signal. That said, you would need to have a satellite setup at the main source eg. A data centre in Poland if you were to offer Polish channels. In the Poland Data Center you will need to have the encoding servers with the TV Cards Osprey-450e's is what our clients use since you can capture 4 individual channels at a time which will save you money on your overall system costs. This would depend on how many channels you are looking to offer as well.

Once this is setup and working you will need to have some servers available in the US/CANADA (not sure where you’re located) preferably collocated equipment and you can then send the encoded streams from the servers in Poland to the servers in the US/CAN for the live streaming. You could also create a second file of the live stream and copy this to the servers in the US/CAN to offer time shifting. As for the STBs (set top boxes) from my understanding these would need to be physically located at the residence and not collocated in the data center since the STBs would be connected to the clients high speed Internet connection DSL or Cable with at least 1Mbps downstream dedicated for the live stream. For online low resolution streams they would only need about 512Kbps downstream.

Of course, based on some circumstances such as network latency, the clients connection, bottle necks from their ISP to the servers typical problems are pixelization and freezes of the video stream. With the right setup though you can certainly implement a solution to overcome this issue which is what we did for our clients.

Hopefully this helps and if there are any true IPTV experts out there then please do add more details.

Best Regards,
