Hey, this may sound funny but you gotta start somewhere. I was looking for a pentium 166mhz dedicated server with a few gigs of space just to mess around with, I had one running linux but it died on me, now I decided to look for one for cheap just to play around with unix. Any ideas?

You could always ask around in Web Hosting Request, someone might surprise you with one such offer.

I wouldn't even reccommend that to learn on. I've got a PII 350 with 256 MB RAM, 10 GB HDD, etc. running RH 7.2 in my office. It's just for testing/learning purposes though.

Anyway, it slows down to a crawl sometimes... I had a PII 233 before and that was too slow. I'd reccomend at least getting a PII especially if you are actually going to host anything on it. :)

It's a great idea though, why spend the $$$ when you're just learning?? You can build a PII machine for nothing with parts laying around or from friends... or get one used for $100.

I'm setting up a P200/96M ram at the moment to do some testing on, it's a bit of a ball-tearer :D

I bought 4 133-200 mhz machines for this exact purpose, and they run fine command line but don't expect usable gui interface below 300 mhz 128 mb of ram. Right now I'm on a PII 350 mhz 256 mb with Mandrake and its faster than my mom's win98 128mb 500 mhz :stickout: (She's asked me to trade)
