Time Warner Could Strangle the Internet (http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0103-10.htm)
When competition is limited and free access isn't guaranteed, choices can easily dwindle.

This is one of the reasons I will probably never choose the luxury of a cable connection. The price is too high in more ways than one.

I missed that too!! Since this was just posted yesterday, I am assuming that it is a typo - it happens this time of year, you know. I'll check it out and get back to you.

*edit* Regardless, the problem remains the same and will only be getting worse.

Hello,

It was a typo. I don't know whether or not the article was online on the Portland Press Herald website.

We published it from the email from Stacy below:

Hope this helps,

Dear Common Dreams,

Please consider including the following article on your web site, which was first published in the Portland (Maine) Press Herald. It deals with the Bush Administration's recent moves to suspend open access requirements for broadband (cable and DSL) internet service providers, which will lead to monopoly and duopoly control of internet access and bring an end to the internet as the open, democratic medium we know.

Although the article opens with reference to the local situation, the bulk of it focuses on national policies and is applicable to every region of the country.

Thanks.

Sincerely,
Stacy Mitchell

I will beg to differ. What incentive is there currently for new companies i.e. competition to enter the market? Once they build a fiber network, they will be forced to share it with their competitors. Sounds to me like another politically motivated article. What a slippery slope it is to say that it will lead to monopoly and bring an end to the internet. The article also explains how they did the same with telephone companies. Have you read the newspaper lately? Telecom companies are dropping like flies. I for one would not want to enter a market that is obviously too cutthroat to be profitable. Another assumption they make is that there are only a few technologies to obtain access to the internet and that there will be no advancements in the near future. We are already seeing how wireless (802.11x) ISP's are popping up. They also say that they have the ability to block competitors broadcasts. The US has the ability to destroy the entire world by the way of the atomic bomb, but does that mean that they will? NO. There are rules and regulations for the free flow of information that protect us from these things happening.
