View Full Version : Web Host with SQL DB
KevinW22 01-03-2011, 12:27 AM I am looking for something in range of $8 - $10 a month for testing purposes only. Must be ASP.Net. I also need to have access to SQL. I have some programs I am rewriting from Win 32 to ASP.Net. However here is the thing: for on of the Win 32 programs I still need to connect to the SQL database. Is there anyway I could do this with the kind of hosting I am looking for.
When I host on my home computer I connect by putting in the IP along with the sql server name and database name in the connection string. I would need to connect the same way.
Thanks.
Kevin
hostfirst 01-03-2011, 01:48 AM A windows shared hosting plan plus sqlserver extra is enough for your request. And I think your budget is reasonable to choose a reliable windows hosting provider.By the way, what is your script and what is your sql edition? ASP.net 2.0 /3.5/4.0 or SQL Server 2000 /2005 /2008?
reswertious-adam 01-03-2011, 05:21 AM Is location important for you, KevinW22?
KevinW22 01-03-2011, 07:36 AM My program should run under SQL 2005 or 2008. Do you think I would be able to access the SQL database?
I don't think location is important - and not sure why it would be.
Thanks
kpmedia 01-03-2011, 02:10 PM I've run Win/SQL test sites at EuroVPS and Coolwin. Excellent shared Windows options in the $10-15 range.
(EuroVPS is also my main regular host, for higher-end hosting packages. Highly suggested.)
You could always ask those hosts if what you want will work.

Most windows hosts allow MSSQL remote connection.
There should be no problem if database query traffic is moderate.
jayaic 01-04-2011, 03:06 PM You may want to look at WinHost (http://www.winhost.com). They meet your pricing needs and I bet if you contact them they might have an answer for you on connecting to the SQL database.
ieee488 01-04-2011, 04:58 PM I am on Winhost now.
$4.95 paid montly with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Web Edition included can't be beat for a learning website.
For that low price, don't expect quick turnaround on support tickets.

Do u say most or all. Is this not supposed to be one of the most important reasons why windoes hosting is difeerent from linux.

I've never experienced an issue with slow response times from support, for what it is worth.

What kind of turnaround are you getting?

These Win 32 applications, Are they going to be migrated to ASP.NET or still would continue to be client application on long run? Win 32 application may make frequent access to DB remotely (still in control of way it has been coded) and you must take care of it, consider traffic and i think the queries must be optimized by way of something or caching or disconnect record sets. you must be aware of them much.

honestly I think almost all my issues had been responded to within an hour tops. I think there may have been one time I had an issue go about 4 hours
austin72 01-25-2011, 08:09 AM Normally the low rate servers are too slow and some times it shows your error in loading.
lJesterl 01-25-2011, 09:40 PM I've used winhost in the past and I havent had any problems with them. It's a good host for that price range. The only reason I changed is because I had to move to a VPS.
