It is not free, but I have used Quickbooks Online for a small business. It is an Intuit hosted web application which only works in Internet Explorer and it is a $14.95/month hosting fee.

Optigold is free for the first 100 users. Unfortunately it's a bit expensive after that. It's not a full accounting package, but for invoicing and such it's wonderful.
Personally I'd recommend going with quickbooks. It's worth saving up for.
And I think he wasn't making fun persay, just shocked that you were using an app for such an old windows version
Good luck!

When I first started Atlanta Web Host, I used a spreadsheet to keep track of when customers were to be billed and had text files stored in directories to keep records. Very manual process, but an inexpensive way to get started.

If you can't afford quickbooks yet and you are a sole proprieter you may want to look into just getting Quicken Premire Home & Business edition. It will allow you to track accounts receiveable, invoices, business expenses, credit cards, etc. Of course, it will also track personal finances as well, but if you aren't a corporation it would work great for what you would need.
Plus, since it is an Intuit product when you do go to quickbooks your data is already all there and formatted ready to go to import :) I think that version of quicken is around 79 dollars, but right now they have a rebate on it I believe.
