View Full Version : I must be a leper or something - where are people getting signups?
GotGameServers 01-02-2003, 04:35 AM I have my site up and I have a few customers who are happy but I sure would like to know who I have to have sex with to get customers to come to my site and sign up. <jk> :D
Seriously - It takes money to make money, word of mouth just isnt getting it for me. Im not going to shut down because I am breaking even on everything and have enough customers to do that but I seem to be at a stopping point. Without more money to put into advertising it seems like im just going to stagnate here.
Anyone have any ideas? If I had 1 person signing up a week I would be estatic lol.

Web Hosting Stuff 01-02-2003, 04:43 AM You need to advertise ... or perhaps partner with some sites eg. cooperation or an affiliate program.
Your site could use a slight re-design. Get one of those ready made hosting templates. They can make you look more "pro".
My $0.02 :D
Mekhu 01-02-2003, 05:39 AM I agree with the comment about the website. Not trying to knock you at all or anything, and the site isn't that bad, but people are VERY awwed by those new "hosting style" of sites...

eddy2099 01-02-2003, 05:56 AM It is a difficult market with a lot of new entrants and probably a lot of existing and more established companies around.
Like the rest said, marketing, patience and a good business plan are essential in any business. The internet is a very complex place and if people do not know you are there, would probably not be able to find you. It is not like if you are a new hot dog stand or something where if you just position yourself in some street where there is a steady stream of people, you would most probably be noticed and gain customers without much enough.
There are like probably tens of millions of web sites around competiting for the same prime estate and maybe in the same industry doing like wise.
So all said and done, the best advertising would still be the old traditional means of word of mouth, flyers, cold calls (Errk!) and approaching local businesses to solicit business. Maybe some sponsorship of say hosting a local charity website or some other worthwhile causes which is heavily publicized could get you the ticket to be known. ;)
Try anything and everything as long as it is legal and that does not require you to sell your soul.
Patience is important too. Do not give up at the first sign of trouble if you are serious about the business. Of course, sitting on your butt and pouting would probably do much of the trick. You would need to be proactive.
A good business plan is one which charts out a SWOT chart to detail who you are, where you are, the market and competition and what your competitive edge is. The next is a good roadmap to show where you want to be in the next 3, 6 , 9 and 12 months. Work out a budget in terms of costing and its break-even points over that same period. Details what you want and need to do. Make sure that you go back to that plan time and time again to see where you are and how far you have gone and make adjustments along the way.
It is a tough business but if you know where to look, you can still scrape some gold.
Take care and all the best

Not to slag off your site/layout or anything... but yes.

I totally agree with this, again note I'm not slagging off your layout as if you check out my sites layout - it sucks too. Try 4Templates, they have some pretty nice and cheap layouts; they are great if you are just starting out and don't have enough clients to make you a nice backhand of cash to pay for it.
Although - If you really want an all exclusive layout, try HostSkin, they have some nice ones too - but range from $400 upwards.
(Their reduced ones are cheaper but in my oppinion not as good or nice as the top ones - in fact I personally prefer the ones from 4Template rather than the reduced ones from Hostskin - so either choose 4Template or a non reduced HostSkin one)

http://www.hostskin.com/
But try and get a nice layout from either one of those places, it will do wonders for your sales - or should do. :D
Finalz 01-02-2003, 08:13 AM Anjay, how much do they pay you for the referrals ? :P <jk>
but yes, I liek soem of the 4templates templates too :)
Acsiak - Andrew 01-02-2003, 08:45 AM Fazel! LOL
..really wanna know? not enough! lol :D j/k
But yeah 4Templates have a lot of NICE templates... try them before HostSkin I think as it seems you are on a budget; may be wrong but if you can afford $400+ then by all means don't waist your time 4Templates, hit your keyboard with the words www.hostskin.com and run there!
But... if you could afford that..... maybe you could have a company design something specially for you which you made and wanted??
Snowman30 01-02-2003, 09:26 AM Keep trying ...it wont happen overnight but it will happen!
It took me 4 months before i started gettign signups and now im hosting over 500 websites.:D
Oh and i have a long way to go yet!
michaeln 01-02-2003, 09:57 AM No offense. I agree with some of the others that a redesign couldn't hurt.
Go here and tell him that I sent you:

@eggheadz.com 01-02-2003, 10:54 AM Hi there.......
There is *nothing* wrong with your site, per say. I happen to like individuality, and when I deisgn my site, it's not gonna be that fancy smancy kinda glittery stuff. Be your own peron and don't try to be anything else.
Your site is nice! A few tips on how I would see it..
Youneedawebpage.com take that off of there and put in it's place, a nice image that you can create for free or minimal price with a free or minimal priced software (Google.com is your friend). Whatever HTML editor you are using, try testing out different fonts, and not use the same ol borning Arial/Helvetica/Roman junk. That turns me off and I leave sites like that. BE CREATIVE WITH THE FONTS PEOPLE! I just like a simple straight to the point site. 1st thing I wanna know when I get there, is how much is it gonna cost me.
As for the design, I LOVE the design. Maybe that's because I just love regular tables and what you can do with them (I love to color them, because I love colors). You can integrate tables so many ways.......
All that i'm concerned with is if you provide me good service, not how glittery your site is. Don't try to look corporate like some people do, just be yourself and have patience and it will come.
Also, the market you are going after depends on the look of yoursite. If you are going after a corporate hosting market, your site won't do and what these people are saying is correct.
Once you start getting customers and your business takes off, then you can decide what type of image you want to portray
Don't keep the same site design forever tho...change it up every few weeks.
Thanks,
Dave
