Just wondering
Here is the scoop,
I know very little bash commands or linux,
Our tech guy is on vacation until January 6th
I want to upgrade but am worried I would mess something up
How much would someone charge to do this. I am not going to pay our backup tech because it would be a minimum of $75.00
I read the install file but really did not make a whole lot of sense to me.
I'd suggest you don't install it yourself if you have little admin knowledge. There is really no real rush to install it. If any customer hassles you for it then just say that you are waiting to see if any initial bugs turn up.
If you are brave/foolish then it's a pretty standard configure/make/make install. However, you'd probably want the same set-up as the current PHP install. The bummer is if anything goes bad.
For someone competent and able to solve any subsequent errors....I'd say $50 (?!)

Don't bother upgrading (not worth the hassle if everything is running ok), just wait for the tech guy to return ;)

Typically I only charge about $50 for an upgrade, so don't pay much more than that... And I have to agree with everyone else...
Maybe wait a couple weeks to upgrade.. I haven't even upgraded my production servers yet, just not worth the time in doing it...

I haven't even installed it on a development server yet.
$50 seems about right though, if it's only going to take half an hour and be done off site.

can you run phpinfo(); and just get the configure strings from there? would that work?

To upgrade/install to 4.3.0 is quite easy.
As DigiCrime said just get the configure string download, unzip, then run the configure string, then make, then make install. Then a few other small details.

I had a big problem upgrading because of the javascript and sablotron libraries... in fact I still haven't got to the root of the problem. However you'll only come across this if you have a previous version of PHP installed with XSLT support.
