View Full Version : Moving from Alabanza (?)
Brian Farkas 05-01-2001, 09:03 PM Hello everyone. Our contract with Alabanza lasts through the beginning of August, and we are debating whether or not to stick with them as a provider. If we decide not to, we'd really like to know what our options are. We might end up purchasing a control panel like the one at smarthostingtools.com or cpanel.net, we haven't decided which yet.
We have come up with three possibilities so far: superb.net, rackspace.com, and weinbar.com.
What we need would be feedback from either current or recent customers of these companies... How reliable is their network, how is their support, etc.
Thanks in advance for your feedback, all of us really appreciate it.
Brian Farkas
hostrocket 05-01-2001, 11:06 PM Alabanza Blows... remember the last time they upgraded your control panel other than to start charging for a feature that used to be free? Neither do I.
Brian Farkas 05-01-2001, 11:19 PM Yeah... They were already going to have a 2x price increase (to $800) after the year-end contract was up, but if we wanted to get the box upgraded to PHP4 (something they told us would happen for free on the current box a few months ago- never did) we would have to order a new box for $895, then transfer all accounts over to the new box, while still paying for the old box. They say they will credit anything we've paid on the old server after we take it down, but we would still have to pay for both boxes for at least a week... Plus setup. So it doesn't sound like the best deal financially right now, either.
That's why we are looking for other alternatives :)
We are hoping to find one with a network at least as good as Alabanza, and hopefully some better support.
Brian,
SitePoint (http://www.sitepoint.com) uses RackSpace, as you may know, and the d-server it's on has been astonishingly reliable (the majority of the downtime has been more vB problems than anything else). Support is built into the price and for that, the support has been excellent. I've never seen an occasion where RackSpace has suffered noticeable network outages/slowdowns.
DHWWnet 05-02-2001, 12:19 AM Hello,
I can attest to Superb.net , one of our servers is co-lo'd at hopone, Superb.net's data center.
We had that server since august of 1999 and uptimes have been great, technical support is also great.
feel free to email me if ya want to test our server that is located at superb.
vdi.net is good as well.
cheers,
elijah john :)
Brian Farkas 05-03-2001, 09:46 PM We are also now considering pwebtech.com...
Does anyone have any feedback regarding their technical support and network?
Thanks!

Thanks!
Don't know anything about pwebtech.com, but we have servers with Rackshack and with Weinbar. I personally think Weinbar is the way to go. First Michael (the owner) is really nice and will help you with pretty much anything, second you can use CPanel with Weinbar because with them you can get a Redhat Linux box.
Rackshack is pretty good too considering their price, speed and bandwidth offered, but their support is not that great and you can only get a RaQ from them. RaQs are not that great for hosting just because their control panels are just too limited. Also, Smarthostingtools was supposed to release a panel for the RaQ but I don't think that will happen any time soon.
;)
Timothy 05-05-2001, 04:34 PM I've never hosted with pwebtech.com personally, but I do know that the datacenter it uses (nac.net) is very nice network which seems to be highly reliable.

Contact Dave (dektong) about a dedicated server or colo at Site5, or Matt from site 5 directly. Dave was extremely helpful (and fair) about discussing my alternatives.
-btw I have ordered a Dell 350 (IDE ) P3 webserver from dell. I know it is not SCSI, but I am confident I will not be using the 40+ GB hd myself.

get like FreeBSD server with Plesk, very good deal, 299.99 for 200GB and the whole server etc.... same deal for DELL Red Hat Linux Servers there.
(i prefer FreeBSD)
or if you want cobalt, I would recommend www.rackshack.net
