View Full Version : Transfer DNS for Clients?
steve93138 05-01-2001, 05:19 PM Hello everyone,
I'm planning on starting up a web hosting company. There is one thing that I still don't quite understand and that is:
If someone signs up for web hosting and would like to transfer an existing domain name to my servers (ex: ns1.foobar.com, ns2.foobar.com) then how do I go about initiating the transfer through the Registrar?
Wouldn't it depend on who thier Registrar is? For example, if they are using Network Solutions what do I do? If they are using something like Regsiter.com, what then?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
allending 05-01-2001, 05:28 PM You have to setup your own nameservers with all the information about your clients zones. Then , register your nameserver with your registrars Or Networksolutions. After this has been done, youcan ask your clients to use your nameservers name and IP, assuming you have setup the records properly on YOUR nameserver. ............ i think :D
Sesran 05-01-2001, 05:29 PM Basically, you just give your client your name servers and they just go do it themselves. There will however be the ones who have no clue or be able to figure it out, then you will need to know. The only ones I have worked with is NSI which is far more complicated than most. 000domains.com and register.com you have a password to get into your account.
AH-Tina 05-01-2001, 06:30 PM Point the customer in the right direction and have them update DNS themselves. Create a decent FAQ page for this and it should go pretty smoothly. You'll still have to deal with people who cannot/will not follow instructions - but overall, it will be painless. :)
Wazeh 05-01-2001, 07:53 PM IN most cases you just have to tell your new clients the name of the nameservers and the IPs. They will do the changes themselves. I found that in most cases this works fine. Of course there are a few who don't know what to do; in which case I asked for their registrar's password and did the transfer for them as a customer service.

For some reason, I find that alot of customers try to update our host record, rather than "change ISP" when dealing with Network Solutions. Because of this, we've created a simple instruction page:
http://www.affordablehost.com/manage.html
Feel free to use/copy it (anyone) - and lend some suggestions too. I would like to include register.com on that page too - but I don't have a register.com account AND I've been told that they have different methods for different domains.

steve93138 05-01-2001, 09:13 PM Thanks for the help, everyone!
BTW, I think there is a way to request a nameserver change on behalf of your clients with Network Solutions but I'm not 100% certain... Anyone know about this?

Thanks, I will use a variant on my site.
I have a Register.com domain name an changing the nameservers is as simple as this:
1. Go to http://mydomain.register.com or go to http://www.regsiter.com and then click on "Manage My Account".
2. Enter the username, password, and domain name that you selected when you created your Register.com account. Then click "Login".
3. Click on "Modify DNS" or "Domain Name Servers (DNS)".
4. Place a checkmark in the "Delete" check box.
5. Add the new nameserver info below the old ones - one per line (ex. ns1.foobar.com, ns2.foorbar.com).
6. Click "YES" where it say's, "Would you like to make these changes?".
7. At this point, you may be asked for the nameserver IP addresses. If you are, add them in the edit box displayed next to each nameserver.
8. Follow the directions. You will be sent a confirmation email regarding the changes. Follow the directions in the email. (Usually you only need to click on the confirmation URL and then click "YES" to confirm the changes in the new browser window.)
Feel free to use this info on your site as well...
Annette 05-01-2001, 09:48 PM There is indeed a way to request the modification at NetSol on behalf of clients. Go to https://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/makechanges/domain.mod and enter the domain name and the admin contact email. Modify Existing Domain Name Registration is selected as default. Proceed to the next page, enter your nameserver information and alter the technical contact as necessary. Submit the form, and it will send the authorization request to the admin contact, with instructions to return it to hostmaster.
For other registrars who require a username/password for their web interface, we use a template email, as follows, with a subject of "Request for domain modification: nameofdomain.com".
-----
We have received a request to modify the above referenced domain. However, the domain has been registered through
(Name of Registrar) (http://www.linktoregistrar.com)
which has a web interface that requires a username and password from the registrant of the domain in order to make changes to the domain record. If you have registered this domain, and wish to have us make the necessary modification, please forward the username and password for the registrar listed above, and we will modify the record on your behalf; if you prefer to handle the modifications yourself, please use the information below to modify your record(s). If you did not register the domain, but had another provider register it for you, please notify them that you wish to have the domain record modified, and provide them with the following information:
Primary DNS Server hostname: NS.HOSTMATTERS.COM
Primary DNS Server address: 208.56.139.101
Secondary DNS Server hostname: NS2.HOSTMATTERS.COM
Secondary DNS Server address: 208.56.138.85
*Resellers: please note that if you have chosen to use your own nameservers, you must register those nameservers at the same registrar through whom you registered your domain. Please substitute the nameserver information generated through your control panel for the nameserver information above.
Please let us know if you encounter any difficulties or require any assistance.
Regards,
-----
And that's that. About half of our clients who request modifications and use registrars other than NetSol send their logon information and have us make the changes.
