CDN moves the content as close as possible to the customers'/visitors' network in order to get the best possible load time.

As always, wikipedia explanation should do for starter.

A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is system containing copies of data , placed at various places in network to maximize the bandwidth for access to the data from clients through the network. The content generally includes web objects and other components of internet delivery.
