So, for DNS hosting providers, what route do you recommend?

Shoot!

Yeah, DME is great, but their query limit can be annoying.

We've never have a problem with the platform that LogicBoxes provides to NE1/RC resellers/customers.

That's one of the few portions of the system that's went pretty much trouble-free.

If only they would of kept the paid model, it was worth paying for. With it being free the service is still good but you can only use it for domains in the system.

Is that some hard limit, or just the fact that there are paid quotas?

It's an inconvenient fact of life that providing more services costs more money. If they didn't charge by usage, then it would be no better than the so-called unlimited hosts.

If you think their limits are annoying. You will never want to look at Dynect or UltraDNS or Affilias or Netriplex..... Now those guys are expensive!

DNS Made Easy for less than 10 million queries per month is a steal. Always less than 4% of any of those other guys mentioned above. Above 10 million though, they are about 20% of the above pricing...

Overall I only had one problem with DNS Made Easy in about 9 years, so I can not say they are bad by any means.

One provider that I use a little bit now is the EasyDNS.com service. They are really building up their network really well.

Is that at posted DME rack rates, or special negotiated quotes?

I stumbled across this site today which offers some filtering/security built in with DNS service. http://www.cloudflare.com/

I think it looks pretty cool.

It seems they mention filtering/security but in a different feature section than their dns services. In other words it may have both features, but one is not derived from the other. It appears they are buying from nettica.

Hi plumsauce,

We basically act as a reverse proxy via DNS (more information here (http://www.cloudflare.com/wiki/What_is_DNS_and_why_do_I_need_to_change_it%3F)). Please let me know if I can help clarify anything about CloudFlare.

From reading that page, it would appear that the sole function of the authoritative dns is to point the site at your reverse proxy. That wouldn't be anything special with respect to the DNS side of things.

I have used nettica.com for several years. As far as I know they do not have any query limitations. They also have an API and you can rebrand the service for yourself as well.

They offer 5 different name servers that are all regionally dispersed. Never had a single issue with them in the time I have used their service.

I don't get it. If you have your own VPS/dedi, why don't you set up a DNS server on your own? You could manage it yourself then without any limits on the number of queries and so on.

Its best to have a second (or more) dns server located in a different DC, City, Country for redundancy purposes.

Exactly. As a cPanel host, we use cPanel's free DNS ONLY software to create a DNS Cluster. You can have all of your dedicated servers sync DNS records to it. Easy to set up and more control. Plus you can just throw it on a cheap VPS in another data center and call it a day.

From reviewing your link, it is not a "cluster" in the usual sense of the word. It is actually a hidden master configuration. Correct terminology is important to avoid confusion.

Good point, however cPanel's documentation (http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/AllDocumentation/WHMDocs/ConfigureCluster) refers to this type of setup as a DNS Cluster, and setup is done in WHM's "Configure Cluster" page.

Are there any other DNS manager besides cPanel DNS Only?
I saw a paid one few days ago but I can't find it since yesterday. It was "dns cluster" or something but I can't find the link now.

If you go to dns.net, and look in the tools/resources section you should find it. Written in php.

edit: whoops, that's not a paid one, it's open source and free as in beer.
